Request for comments - Das Shroomhouse

by Garth Johnson · in Artist Corner · 12/02/2007 (12:33 pm) · 11 replies

I have just started creating models in Hexagon and am working on a simple game with my daughter. She wanted a 'Little People' area with natural/organic houses that blended with the flora of her area.. so.. I created Das Shroomhouse as my first attempt. Looking for any suggestions or constructive criticisms of the model/texture/etc. I will be making the same model with several more textures as well (the well known red-top white polkadot version being one of them of course)

I like them. Imaginative and fun. It could be a hit with the potheads too...

Now, I think these look great already, but you asked for ideas, so here's a couple:
The trunks are shiny like polished wood. Should they look more weathered?
The texture on top is a let-down compared to the rest of the model. The detail level is low, and not interesting. IMO they should look bumpy.

IMHO they look too realistic, they need more bright colors.

Hmm. I think you are right. Thank you! Here, is this better?

The shiny texture was a result of my being a noob in Hexagon... this was rendered with TGE in my test zone. Looks a bit better I think.

The top texture was a total redo - and worth it. I had apparently messed up the seams - only was able to see it on one side, but... ick. Now the seams are fixed and the textures are all much higher quality/resolution.

Dont forget the blue hat... lol, thats actually not a bad mushroom house, if you wanted to make a remake of a old game, called smurfenstien. Its a spoof of wolfenstien from the apple2e, its pretty funny. But that looks pretty good and thelighting helps.

Nevermind. I see the picture now. For some reason the jpeg didn't appear the first time I looked at the new post.

The quality here is good. The coloring makes it look more cartoonish than before. However, with my own children I've noticed that they prefer stylized/cartoon graphics. Since you're making it for your daughter, its perfect.

Personally, I liked the more-realistic mushroom coloring that you started with. But, that's really just personal preference.

Will you be adding a door?

@Dustin - Yes, doors and window struts are next (soon as I figure out how to add them usably in TGE). A nice rough wood one, with an option for a carved one as well I should think.

@Edward - dude you just set both of our ages - I definately remember that! LOL

We will be working on some smooth/round/cartoony characters - reminiscent of the old "Creatures" games from Mindsoft. THAT, however, will have to wait till I have mastered Hexagon a bit more and have begun the animation tutorials for characters here in the forums.

I am going to add a batch of textures to the mix as well - old wooden style, red and white, purple, pink etc. My current working texture set is the one my daughter requested: blue paisley on the bottom, aqua marine with purple and turquoise dots on the top. Heh - who says the 60's cant come back. sheesh.

If anyone is interested, I will keep posting updates as I finish the versions. I intend to post the whole thing here (models and all) when done if anyone thinks it is worth/wants it.

..and as always, comments and suggestions are welcome.

MMMmm.. side note: what format is best to publish as? DTS? OBJ? I currently have Milkshape, Daz Studio, Bryce and Hexagon. I can export (via Milkshape mostly) to most anything.. obvious exceptions being MAX and a few others. (unless any one can point me to a way to export/import max WITHOUT having Max itself - is there a way?)

I will be getting Maya (AFTER the Christmas purchases for the family drains the bank as far as they are going to) and that will open up a few other options I am sure. But, untill then? What would be best for the most accommodating format?
