Any good 3d painting apps out there?

I'm looking for a decent layer-based 3d-painting app. I use blender for my models and UV unwrapping, but the built in 3d painter is terrible, and I'm sick of the "guess and check" method of painting on the UV's with GIMP. Obviously it's be great if there was something like this for free, but I can't expect that, so and good mentions will do. I've see a few out there, and I'm just wondering what people recommend.

I believe the Cinema4D/BodyPaint stuff is pretty good, but I haven't used it myself, just seen videos and the like.

Alright, cool I'll download the demo of BodyPaint and see what I think. I'm a student, so I can get some decent educational discounts on this stuff.

Most just paint the textures in a 2dapp like photoshop....gimp is ok try Artweaver @
