New weapon and character animations

I have created a character and a weapon for him that will require some different animations when he fires the weapon. I know how to make the animations and bring him and the weapon into TGE. My question is besides creating them and the .cs files for them do I need to add code the the engine that tells the character to use these animations when he is hold that weapon. If so is there a resource that might talk me through this. I am not a programmer so the better the resource the better the chance I have to implement this. Thanks in advance.
