Spline modeling

I'm trying to learn spline modeling in 3d max, I know how to use the spline tool, but I'm
trying to learn how to model a character using splines.

Would I use spline cage modeling like in the tutorial shown in Max 9 (the example is the knight in the chess set tutorials.)
