Are the models like the characters and jericho made using MAX 3.1, the animations etc. ?

Yes, the shape exporter currently runs on Max 3.1 (would probably run on 3.0 too). After the inital release I will look into updating it to work with Max 4.0.

And of course we have several teams who want to work on exporters for other modelers - like MilkShape and OpenFX.

Thanks for the reply, can I use standard bones with skin ? Would I need to apply character studio with physique for bipeds, or does it support both?

You should be able to use both. The MAX faq has a few comments on that.
