A Windows Vista quest..

by Jan Sorensen · in General Discussion · 11/04/2007 (9:10 am) · 8 replies

Hi there :-).

A generally quest.. Has anybody here experience with, how TGE and/or TGEA works in Windows Vista compared with XP. I specially think on FPS, lighting, load time and so.

Can I for example use TGE in Vista or is it "a dead project"?
Almost all new computers here in Denmark delivered automatic with Windows Vista :-O.

Hope for comment
Jan :-)..

You can use it, but you have to be wary of older video drivers for Vista. ATI drivers, even newer ones, are suspect on some cards, but it works quite well from my experience.

Install another drive or make a partition. Then put XP on that and you can pick either when bootup.

There are detailed instructions on how to make Vista dual boot out there.

We had some TGE gfx problems with OpenGL on ATI vistas which were easily remidied by disabling compiled vertex buffers - an easy thing to do from script. there's a thread here on GG about that, which if you can't find it post here and i'll find it tomorrow.

Hi again and thanks for answers :-).

Maybe I express my self indistinct, so I try again on my Viking English in another way.

It's not my personal problem on that way I mean, but more generally for "my future users" with Vista and TGE. I have here access to three computers with Vista and some different "standard" specifications for graphic card, RAM and so (not specially design for Vista).
Also computers we can meet out in the big "user world".

Computer 1: it's work but with slow FPS.
Computer 2: Computer goes down..
Computer 3: It's work, but no terrain light compiling and slow FPS.

Because I don't have more than these three computers as a reference, I ask here for help from others there have try to run TGE and okay,, also TGEA, under Vista with "normally" computers.
My problem is also, can I on our homepage say. We are Vista convertible? Or not?
And how can I specify "minimum" technical computer data for our game, if the user have Vista in use?

Are the solution? .. Out with TGE and in with TGEA, is that the solution? Can SP1 for Vista give a solution? Yes there are many questions after my head.

I'm sure, we (my group and I) are don't alone with this problem.

I've been having issues with file permissions while dev'ing and trying to save settings/etc while the game is running.

I haven't been able to get %file.openForWrite() to work for me yet...

Are you using TGB Aaron? There is a problem with fileobjects in 1.5.1 that is addressed in the next patch.

Thanks David - yes, I am using TGB. Turns out there is a bug - and some workarounds are here:

Are any of those high performance? If so how does it perform. We need more details on system specs. It could simply be the systems are underpowered for bloated vista.
