How to open .pst files

by William Shellman · in Torque Game Engine · 10/20/2007 (2:06 pm) · 8 replies

I have acquired some files with the extension, .pst . I do not know what program will open them.
I have the 7-zip utility.

What are these files supposed to be?

PST is generally associated with Microsoft Outlook as a personal folder file.

I can attempt to send you the files if you like. I was puzzled by them myself. They are some sort of model files I picked up when surfing some free models sites.

Strange. I wonder if they are messages (with attached files) exported from Outlook or some-such.

If they aren't model files, why would anyone use the format for making models? I found them on a 3D models site with a number of LWO and 3DS files.

According to http://filext.com/file-extension/pst, it's a Lightwave Preset. Google is your friend.

Hmmm. I use Lightwave and haven't distributed preset files (obviously since I didn't recognize them).

Very strange. I have attempted to use the various programs which I own to open the files but to no avail.
I can't figure them out so I just won't bother with them right now. I would however, still like to know what the actual info is on them. I have some ".RAR" or ".rar" files which I can open with my 7-zip utility, but I haven't found an unzip program for the .pst files. I am wondering about the meaning of the extension .pst . Does it stand for "Post"? Perhaps why it is tied into Outlook Express? I could not find any help through Google, Microsoft, or anywhere! I just give up on it for now, I need more study of the term and its functions. Anyway, thanks for your help. I wish it would have worked out but there's always tomorrow!

Pst files are used mainly by 2 programs.

Outlook/Outlook Express (it is the main folder to which a persons folders and such are saved too, a database type file)

Lightwave 3D (In lightwave, pst files are used to define material presets. If you have lightwave, open the material preset window and then open the pst files with it to see if that is what they are. if so then all you got was a few materials not models.)
