Technology Demo's....of sorts.

I've been thinking recently about the idea of "technology demo's" for torque, developed by the community.
These could be small playable games, animations, showcases of specific events.... anything. The basic idea behind it is just to bring together people to work on small projects, that aren't going to take up months and months of work, but will hopefully benefit the community by helping people gain experience. As they would likely be specialised towards "fancy effects" it could also be beneficial to the codebase, as they should be coded under gpl or something, so the code is available for the rest of the community to use in their projects.
Another benefit I see would be publicity for the engine, so there are lots of potential screenshots and demos for people to really see what this engine is truely capable of.
Just throwing an idea into the mix, it may have been mentioned before, dunno...but I thought it was worth mentioning :)

Well yeh, but realmwars is a massive project. I'm talking about lots of small projects. You can't exactly use realmwars as a learning experience...

I think torque is higher up the food chain than simply demoing some rendering techniques etc. There's better ways to view the latest eye candy.
The resources offer ways for people to show smaller pieces now anyway.

I think what he is talking about is a repository code things like new class objects, etc. that when plopped into the code base can be hooked in easily to show you a technique. Then you could plop it into a example game and zip it up and put it somewhere where people could to it. I for one like the idea because it would extend upon the racing mod, fps, and rw and build more examples of how to do different things. Reuseable modules are nice. Especially when they are documented well in the form of a procedure on how to hook things together.

as a T2 guy who has always been curious about Torque, and also as a gamer, I am very interested in seeing Torque's improved vehicle physics in action.
add a bunch of recent Melv improvements, and you could have a little demo that would "knock my socks off".. and probably do the same with the stockings of other potential Torque developers.
I don't need to see any real gameplay, I just want to see the new wheeled vehicle phyiscs in action (I'd especially like to see a wheeled vehicle's behaviour at speeds over 80 km/h).
as for models, I know the GG dunebuggy is done, and I think there's a jeep out there somewhere... oh and if possible, throw-in a Corsair or a biplane for kicks :)
edit: oops I'm one GG interview behind..

sounds good, but how long until it's done ?

Probably the biggest visible addition has been Tim's great vehicle physics. They are good enough that we have decided to release our own GG created commercial game based on the technology.
sounds good, but how long until it's done ?

If you don't have a SDK license (why not?) Ask someone nicely on IRC or something, as I think it's fine for them to give you a compiled one just not the source.

I think the vehicle code is done. There's a decent demo of it in the SDK test app (get 1.1.2 compile it run with torquedemo -racing).If you don't have a SDK license (why not?) Ask someone nicely on IRC or something, as I think it's fine for them to give you a compiled one just not the source.
