Instant Action....and so it begins

by Derek Smart · in General Discussion · 10/11/2007 (10:00 am) · 114 replies

I just got a news bulletin which didn't leave me surprised in any way, shape or form.

No offense to anybody, but yes, what you are reading from the above bulletin is exactly what I've been saying all along and which most of you (too scared to utter a word) haven't. That being...

Whats old is new again (Or some nonsense like that) meaning that anyone hoping to see a new type of games cropping up on IA, other than the same style of games already found here, is going to be disappointed.

Yes Virginia, its just GG, with new paint (which looks great btw!!), a little bit more money and whatnot. Another player in the already crowded casual games market.

My guess is they'll lose money hand over fist and everything will head South once the bean counters at IAC start staring suspiciously at the bottomline.

.....or maybe they have access to another type of casual gamer waiting to be set free of the bonds of the existing crop.

However, Torque 2, does sound interesting. We'll see how much of a mess and disparity all these various Torque versions creates.

Bye!

I'm going to post my question here, versus starting a new thread. I have a feeling this has been asked and I overlooked it.

"How/Who" do I contact to find out what the IA platform "can/will" do, becuase I'm intersting in finding out if I can port my games over to it?

I'm not interesting in bitchin about GG's decision to offer IA, they've already made it before they told us. However, I think the real bitchin will start when we find out what the platform can't do. All i heard so far is web based gaming, which means sandbox security, which means mondo limitations. Not every game will be suited for IA, that s fine with me, but I'd like to now know which ones are.

@ Jody

Good luck with that.

I'm still waiting for confirmation of a couple of points internally (within GG) regarding your questions, but generally speaking the IA platform doesn't add any technological barriers to capability--pretty much if your game engine can do it, the platform can do it. InstantAction is a set of services associated with your game, and the ability to operate within a seamless browser based interface.

In general, games that "aren't suited for IA" will not be because of technology, but instead will be based upon publisher acceptance (us) of the game itself. I agree it would be useful to have more guidelines regarding submission guidelines, and I'll bring this up to the appropriate team members.

If one of the things that my game can do is "run on platforms other than windows", can IA do it?

I guess I've been hotfooting around the question, but I really would like to know :-)

I delayed my response because I wanted to get the word directly from the InstantAction Project Manager. Here's what she said:

Quote:
"Right now we're focusing on Internet Explorer 6 and 7 for Windows XP and Vista -- they will be fully supported at launch in January. Our next priority is Firefox support on the aforementioned operating systems. All other work is in the planning stages and cannot be commented on at this time."

From past conversations I know that's not the answer you wanted Gary, but I wanted to be honest with you as to the exact current state and plans as best as we can say at this time. Please understand that this isn't a push off--it's been discussed quite a bit, but they are currently focused on the launch scheduled for January, and will be evaluating success criteria and risks for other operating systems much more closely once they get a chance to breathe.

I also went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Torque 2/Transparent Development .blog, which you can read here: Transparent Development, Torque 2, and You!.

In the interests of having all the information in one place, please refer any further questions specifically related to Torque 2 or Transparent Development to the comments of that .blog. Over the next couple of days we will have a separate blog discussing some of the details of InstantAction as well.

I have a good feeling about IA and I want to be there, as Developer! Especially in the very first day!

How can it be possible? or should I wait to beta ends?

I would be glad in participate in this step from the start.
Who should I contact? (yes/no) or There is any (approximation) date where subscription from 3rd party developers will be accepted?

I dont know if that is the idea at all. The idea -I think- is more around be able of see and debate, not directly develop (aka "put your hands on the code").

Stephen is now the time to start submitting games for funding and IA approval? Or should we wait until a more define structure comes about in terms of what games you are looking for? I have the design doc ready just working on the Pitch document.

If the answer is yes do we send that games@garagegames.com or Andy? And lastly what is the turn around time that a person can expect after they submit. Like how long will it take you to reply Yes or No to a game idea and funding.

@Donald: You can submit a game at any time, but I can tell you right now that Randy is probably going to want to see at least a prototype/demo unless the submission is from a studio with a proven track record of previous games--and even then a prototype demonstrating the game idea is much more important than a full length design document or pitch document.

Once you have something ready to submit, you should sent it to joshd with the normal gg domain.

Will do. I will have the demo complete with in a month. The studio I have team up with does have a proven track record as well. Thanks for the info. Do you know of any SLA ( Service Level Agreement) on the time it will take for him to respond?

Honestly, I can't promise he'll respond at all...they are getting all sorts of submissions currently.

That being said, if the idea is strong and the demo looks good, I'm pretty sure they'll have some feedback or request for additional communication.

Mental note, stuff submission with large amounts of money....

Read most (but not all) of this and the bit about web based stuff and people knocking it interested me.

Have they not heard that Quake 3 is planned to be released as a 'web based game' running in a browser.

Hardly call that a 'casual' game, try telling that to some of the past (and current) masters out there.....
