flying vehicles in RealmWars

hey guys, I have been thinking about this for a while.... I have been thinking how cool it would be if there were say wild animals that inhabited the RealmWars world that the player could use as vehicles... or even tamed ones that you could get from a stable or something..... anyway, I was thinking a pegasus would be a really cool start for flying vehicles, here are some screenshots of concept art that I just made

I was wondering what the community thinks about such an idea.... would a pegasus make a cool flying vehicle? do we need a flying vehicle at all? just voice your oppinion :)

I am willing to put a lot of work into this concept if everyone likes it, but I think this would make a better group project, let me know what you think :)

can everyone see the screen shots ok? clicking on the link is giving me another tripod browser, but if you cut and paste it into your browser, it should load just fine :)

Put an HTML on your web site which points to the 3 images and then everyone will be able to see them.

ha, dont worry anthony.... this is just a concept model.... in fact I couldnt use it if it only had a few poly's, I just got the horse and wings off of 3dcafe...... I just put them together real quick to give everyone an idea of what I was talking about :).... didnt want to actualy put the time into a custom model if no one liked it

Creatures that you can ride around on are I think *the* most popular request, so will do everything we can to get some in.

What I was thinking was there would be two types of creatures:

1: Tame creatures that you get out of a stable or something. These would be common mounts like horses, or Boars (or Goldak Riding Beat or whatever its called) for Orcs.

2: Wild creatures that you would have to subdue before mounting. (Like in good old Golden Axe) These would be more powerful with a limited number per level. You would have to do some damage to them to get them to submit, and in battle you could get knocked off and they would run off or go crazy.

One issue I have is that it is hard to come up with creatures that 2 or 3 people can ride on without it becoming like a corney Dino-Riders clone. (Remember those old toys?) A bunch of people sitting on one creature is weird, plus most creatures don't have turrets sticking out of their backs...

But anyway beasts you can ride around on are a popular request and we will do our best. Beast models and programmers would help of course!

well, I'm assuming no more than one, or at most two people could fit on a single pegasus, much like a horse.... I would be happy to start working on this if someone could help me implement it as a vehicle (cuz I really have no idea how :( ) if anyone has some experience modeling and working with torque, and could be a help, then contact me imediately and we can get started on it right away :)

This is a very interesting concept. Could there be basic mounts that everyone could get, but would be very limited in their abilities. The other better units would be found traveling the world, and, would, like you guys said, travel and need to be tamed in order to use.

Flying vehicles are things I've wanted to see from the start. Not too many, of course, and not too powerful, but nontheless...

I think that vehicles will be summoned rather than tamed, although it's not ruled out. It would be more realistic for them to be scattered about the plains, but then map makers would have to include them (and sometimes they wouldn't want them), and the vehicles would have to be AI-manipulated and then be switched over to player-controlled. It may just be more of a problem than it's worth.

The only races to use a horse would have to be humans and elves, most likely. Even then, it'll probably be the only decent scout-class conception vehicle we have. (What other small, fast creatures can you ride?) So I imagine that for the benefit of being widespread in our creativeness, we won't have a flying horse as well. There are a lot of other flying creatures in myth and legend that we can use. But once more, nothing is ruled out really.

Flying "vehicles" is a great idea. I think that There should be four sets fo creatures to be used in that function. Two of which would be specific to each race, such as the pegasus would only be usable to the human/Elf side and have say, a hippogriff for the orgs. then the third group would be useable to all sides, such as giant eagles and the like. The fouth group being just wild beasts that are'nt necessarily tameable, like dragons for example, that just terrorize areas or bases. Or mabey have something to do with the stroy, like the goal is to kill the giant dragon or something. You could even make a "Slay the dragon" game type or the like, just to make things interesting. Also, realm wars could have a large complement of ground creatures in the same groups. I'm thinkin something besides the usuall hourse, although the hourse isn't a bad idea by any means, Like those giant lizard things the storm troopers rode in star wars.
(The creatures listed above are just examples, as not to say that only these creatures should be used.)

I like the idea of animals as vehicles, but I think we should come up with our own :D

Animals as vehicles is realy only a matter of interpretation as is a animal/vehichle having player controlled weapons, this is something i have been working on myself, with some success.
The main problem you have with Realm Wars is that to acheive this, your going to have to "reinvent the wheel"
A lot of the code that allows this to be possible has been stripped from the TGE engine for obvious copyright reasons.
I do think that initialy RW needs to release some basic vehicle and vehicle weapon code, you will also need to add turret code.
how this is implemented as an animal/vehicle is simply model texture and animation interpretation,
A Dragon for instance could be coded with the head as a turret with some on creation mount turret/head code, controlled by a coercer, having 2 mounts for players, one pilot one coercer, with some manipulation on the swivel for the turret/head and manipulation for the eye node for the coercer you will have a animal/flying/vehicle with the second player controlling the turret/head as a giant flame thrower, the rest is a matter of using model and anims to interpret the whole thing.
As i said you have to reinvent alot of the code from within tribes2 to have this work in RW before you can even think of adding these things to RW. you need to had flight vehicle code.
