What if someone has made something close to your idea?

How should I handle this.... I have this idea that I have fleshed out and all written down in a nice Game Design Document and everything. But today I come to find out that someone else has or well is very close to making something very close to it. Different system but still pretty close. What should I do? Move forward or trash the idea?

Well from what I can tell if you add all of those parts together then its new idea. Atleast that is the way I see it.

@Fyreus Maccoy
Actually, the mail thing for copyright is incorrect since postmarks can be faked very easily. I would recommend registering it if you're worried.

There are a ton of mech games and mech licenses out there (as well as studios for creating big robot games, anime, manga, etc).

The thing to remember is that you can't Copyright an Idea. Create what you want, just don't call it the same thing. Look at all the RPGs that use Magic Missiles and stuff like that. Most of the ideas came from original Dungeons and Dragons stuff.
