Special Characters In Chat HUD

When chatting I sometimes get strange box characters. For example, if I type SHIFT+ENTER. Is there a good way to filter these special, unrecognized characters out of my chat message before it gets sent?

Also if I hold CTRL along with any other key it really messes things up --- doesn't even let me type. Is there a way to have the chat hud ignore CTRL key input?
