Video Games and Television

Recently, I've been watching a lot of TV online, including "My So-Called Life." I'm now wondering why we, as a public, watch a lot of TV about everyday, normal life; but we, as a public, more or less refuse to play games about the same subject matter.

I'd say it has to with the fact that games have one thing TV shows don't, interactivity.

Its one thing to watch shows with stories like that. People enjoy them because they can relate to them in some way, or they find the interactions between characters interesting, and you get to enjoy and relate to this story from the comfort of couch while relaxing.

Then you throw in interactivity into the mix and the same story becomes too much like real life. Basically my thought is, at the end of the day, people don't want to come and do the same thing all over again.

I think its because most people have no real life of their own, and would rather watch TV to pass the time away.

Scott was right about the interactivity, its what can makes games interesting.

Oh, and there are plenty of video games based around the simulation of real life. Facade is a good example. Though not a very fun game, it is quite interesting. People don't refuse to play games involving real life examples, there just aren't enough good ones out there yet.
