Rpg / sci-fi game idea

I was kicking around some ideas yesterday and thought this might be a really interesting premise for a game and wanted to see what kind of feedback there is.
The core of the game would be tactical space ship combat with the combat actually being turn based. You would be "employed" by a black ops part of the future government so I can think of a lot of interesting missions that could come from that. Exploration, sabotage, intelligence missions, assassination, etc. There could be a hand full of alien races to contend with as well factions within your own government.
The ship combat like I said would be turn based not hack n slash. Normal travel would be real time. As you progressed through the game of course you could get different ships, upgraded weapons, new systems, etc.
The other aspect of the game would be rpg. You could hand pick and be assigned a crew that will start out green but gain skills as you progressed. For example, an inexperienced weapons officer would negatively affect your fighting capabilities in space combat. Now in the spirit of a top down rpg game, squad turn based combat can be incorporated as well. Some examples would be you would have to take an away team on a planet to infiltrate an enemy base. Or during ship to ship combat the enemy beams a boarding party over. Once again your crew members would have "personality" as in skill levels, etc. that would make a difference in missions.
This whole thing could be based on d20 system. It may sound like a lot but I think while the content of course would be very involved the actual code and modding of torque wouldn't be so bad.

Umm yea but the distance to the moon is only 2 light years.

Uhm... We'd still be in the middle of the Apollo program if that was the case ;) The moon is only about 250,000 miles away, or a few days via Saturn V rocket. Still too long for a game with realtime travel, unless those days are jam-packed with things to do...
