From browsing around I think I've noticed a trend in Indie Games, so please correct me if Im wrong, but, is it just me or are most indie games simple and addictive puzzle/simulation games than bigger, shooter type games? Maybe I've just been looking in the wrong places, but thats what I see when I see indie games.

indies have realised that the best type of game for them to make is the smaller scale puzzle game because they stand more chance of getting something like that out than halo3
Also there is currently a huge demand for casual games and this might be why indies are making these games to meet that demand?

There are also some terrific non-casual games too. The first indie game I noticed which really wowed me was Star Wraith: Shadows of Orion a few years back. That particular game is now free, but the developer has continued to develop new space-sim games and has a decent following.
Check out the main Star Wraith page.

I agree there is a large growth in the casual market and perhaps most indies are now focusing on that industry. There are also some terrific non-casual games too. The reasons why indies usually stay in the small casual market has been outlined, but there are a few exceptions. Check out GameTunnels top 100 indie games and you will see some examples there.
