Creating gravitized solar system

by Taslim Dosunmu · in Technical Issues · 08/28/2007 (9:19 am) · 15 replies

Does anyone know how to make an object like a round terrain map to make it like earth, then add gravity
so that objcts go towards its center not straight down infinitely. and i want to make the sun the center and all other planets rotate around it, without the objects sliding off.

p.s. is there a known way to make like movies with torque i.e. you walk to this cave and through a trigger starting the movie then camera moves showing like a dragon then it wakes up and roars. is that possible?
and if so how to do it?

If you want an accurate physics simulation of a solar system with planets that have accurate gravitational pulls on-planet as well as off, you will have to code it from scratch. And it will not be the easiest thing in the world, either. There are some great open-source astronomy programs out there that simulate many aspects of this. However, they are not designed for games...which doesn't mean that they could not be extended, but you may end up having to do a huge amount of work to make it "gamey" just like you would have to do a lot of work to get an accurate simulation of this level into TGE or Unreal 3 or any game engine.

And I posted in the other topic about the cameras, trying to figure out what type of system you are looking into.

Oh Sorry my system's windows vista. And i was trying to figure how i would tell tge to make all characters fall towards that model. I mean wouldn't that be tight if you could do that? and if you're good at scripting
can you help me make my game? i just need to know the different functions what they're for the parameters
and datablocks and creating player data, a gui so that players can choose their character type, and telling torque to check the character type then make them live in a different part of my world. If you know what to do please give me like tutorials. Cuz i searched gg.com all over for good tutorials but i dont understand them.

I don't have time to work on my own projects, let alone other people's.

Have you gone through the basic torque documentation? Have you gone through the minApp tutorials? Just doing those two things and familiarizing yourself with TGE will go a long way. Much farther than trying to make your dream game without any understanding of the engine you are making it with. Start small, learning as you go, and then integrating resources. If you chunk up your project, you can start very small but work with a larger goal in mind.

Right now, you are looking at a combination of C++ and scripting changes that would take a significant amount of time to tweak to get right. Matching a variable, say "race" or "class" to a spawn point is easy. Creating a character selection GUI with player customization, stat selection, etc to then pass off, is much more arduous.

Awwwww man cmon! In tge descriptions it said that people got it in days! it's taking me like 9 months to get it and i still dont get it!

Taslim, it can take a bit to learn, the basics. It sounds liek your trying to race cars before you learn to ride the bike. Have you made anything, try a mini project to learn the basics. Take out some of the complexities, make a FPS, learn the script rather then start trying to modyify the terrain.cc and .h off the hop. I dont want to be the bearer of bad news but your probably wont get much help or sympathy complaining. For some people it may take years to getit right. Have you considered maybe trying something other then programming? art, music, gui? Try a few of the tutorials.

Do you know how to compile yet? so much more then just doing it in a few days. People that post resources most of them are experienced programmers.

and if your wondering who i am to give you advice.

OMG Cool graphics and i didn't know you could do that with TGE i was thinkin 3-d Thats 4-D.
Well i have worked a while with the books but i dont really get them sometimes. and yea maybe if i make an invenmtory for kork then make things visible that would be great. Hey dude could you give me maybe lessons
like in TDN? If so keep me informed in this forum post.

No i mean like its so tight! Did you make that?

Taslim, yes, alot of the pics you see i put together , the models were done by my modeler, and the AFX stuff is done with a package addon called AFX but its a whole other level of coding to use it.

But on to your issue. No i wish i could help you. But its a trial by fire. Open up the resources, and try adding them, if you dont have a licenced source, get a license so you can get your source and access to the private area. Lots of positive resources there to learn from. Take a moment and post in the private area and we will see what we can do for you.

No no no, 4d is not a concept of how slick or good looking something is, 4d stands for 4 dimensions and is a measure of how we humans experience objects in the space/time room. In general, we only think about the 3 dimensions, height, width and deepth, but most people are also aware of the 4th dimension, time. Time is a bit more abstract since you cant see it. For future refering to stuff that you would normaly call 4d, try the ubquitous catch-all "cool" word. I myself are a fan of expressions from the 80ies, like the stuff they say in the ninja turtles movies, Awesome n Cowbunga n that stuff =)

Well i knew that im just saying thats kool(it's my graphics talk...{yeah i know lame[yeah 4 dimensional without being ruled by time all that]}) teach me please or guide me?

There are no rules for expressing yourself. I was only saying that using "4d" as a postive adjective is really confusing. Also, i hope you noticed that it was a joke. Usaly when i try to make a point, i dont refer to cartoon series from the 80ies, especially not wacked out ninja turtles which revolves around 4 teenage mutant ninja turtles and their master, a senior mutant ninja rat. And lets not forget their deadly nemesises, a ex ninja clad in a can opener costume called the shreder, a brain from another dimension inside a robotic body that changes size as it sees fit, called Krang(?), the comical relief from rocksteady and bebop, a military rhinoceros and a jazz-punk warthog. Man i miss those series
