Im gonna try to make my own game and I have some questions first

Ok, I have been wanting to make my own games for a while so I have decided to try it. I was looking for a game engine and found this website about Torque Game Engine. I read the License agreements but still theres somethings I dont understand (im very new to all this) so I have some questions...

1. I wanted to make a Dirt Late Model Racing game. There has been one made in 1999 by Ratbag games, but it wasnt an idea of theirs that they just made up, Dirt Late Model Racing is a form of racing like anyother Motorsport but no one person owns the rights to it, except like series racing like the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series, but no one owns Dirt Late Model Racing. So would it be ok for me to make my own version of Dirt Late Model Racing?

2. Now, after the game would be released could I or anyone else be able to make addons for it? And they would be free to download on like other people's websites.

3. Could I make all the stuff that will be in the game (cars tracks etc.) with 3ds Max 5?

Thanks for any replys!

Okay some of my answers may be incorrect, but I'm gonna give it a try to answer your guestions.

    1. You would have to check the copyrights on the name of the game. But if it's a sport in general, nothings stoping you.

    2. Yes, but it depends on how you make the game.

    3. If your gonna use Torque, 3D studio is the best way to go in my opinion. Some people use milkshape. To be able to use your 3DS max creations in your game you will need to exporter files into *.dts format. But there may be a problem with the fact that you have 3DS MAX 5. The newest exporter at this site is only for 3DS MAX 4( and 4.2) You can try searching the internet for a DTS exporter for the version of 3DS MAX you have, but I doubt it will work for Torque. Try downloading the MAX 4 exporter anyway. I may work with it, I havn't tried it. I use 4.2.

wow, I didnt even know max 5 was out yet, I thought it still had a few more months..... well anyway, ya, I'm sure I'll get yelled at by someone for bad ethics (people are a little to touchy here) but the way I see it, if you've paid for max 5, then theres no harm in pirating a copy of max 4 to use for the exporter ;).... go for it man, we all started out like you, just dont give up and you will eventualy have a finished game with your name on it... and as for torque, you couldnt have picked a better choice, in the latest release (1.1.2) there is a racing mod included, so it will probably be very easy for you to modify it ;).... anyway, good luck :)

The title that im thinking is ''SUPER DIRTCAR RACING'' How would I check on copyrights on this?

I have some questions about the Torque Engine. I'll admit I downloaded RealmWars and the graphics didnt have me jumping for joy! Now im new to all this and I dont really know what makes graphics good or bad. But doesnt the engine have allot to do with how the graphics look? But im sure the polygon count was way down in RealmWars wich brings me to another qustion, if I make say like a car in 3ds Max and make it very detailed and with allot of polygons would it depend on how good the game engine is to how good it will run or how good of a computer that you have? If that makes sense..LOL Now I have a pretty darn good computer and I've never played a game yet that didnt run perfect! Nascar Racing 2002, GTA 3 you name it! So if I made the game with allot of polygons would it work with the engine as long as I had a computer that could handle it? If I cant get the results that I want then I wont even bother putting all the hard work and effort into it because im not doing this to make money im doing it out of love for Dirt Racing! And Ratbag isnt blowing me away with there dirt games! And I wanted to try my hand at it!

Here are some screen shots of ratbags Dirt Racing Racing 2 game that will be out in Sep. http://www.fireondirt.com/dtr2_preview.shtml

Will the Torque Engine give me as good of graphics as are in these screen shots?

I know my post is put together crapy,I typed as I thought..LOL And I know you guys reading this will think theres no way this kid will ever program a game...LMAO I sure the hell will try my best!

I have also been posting about my plans on the 3ds Max forum and this is what a guy just posted to me...

''Some random info: I've worked in the game industry for the last 3 years, making racing games. We had about 40 graphical artists and 20 programmers running around.

Also, one engine doesn't work. We used a graphical engine (netimmerse) that could be ported to PS2 and Xbox, a physics engine (Havok) to get the physics done, and a sound engine (Miles) for the sounds. The game engine was made in-house. And there needed to be done a LOT of work on the bought-engines to overcome problems and 'bugs'. If you want to work on a race game, the best thing to do is to join a team that is already doing this. This way you get the inside view on how things are done.

Doing it all by yourself is probably impossible.''

This kills hopes :( But is there a physics engine with Torque? physics IS A MUST IN RACING GAMES! And what about sound?

Well to check copyright information goto http://www.copyright.gov

Take note that the game RealmWars is in milestone zero. Nothing about that game is REALLY neato yet. There are a lot of snapshots I've seen that show that torque has great possibilities, take a look at those, click on the link Snapshot Gallery in the little Dev Snapshot section on the top-right of the page.

As far as physics go for the engine, I don't know. If you've ever played Tribes 2, They have pretty good vehicles like a grav cycle, that can fly up and around hills, and a shrike, that can fly upside-down and do barrel rolls. If you haven't, take a look at Tribes2, It was made on a pre version of the Torque.

As far as polygon count goes, I've found that it all depends on the computer you use and it's graphics card. The torque has it's limits, but there not limits that threaten detail in my opinion.

The graphics on the game DTR2 look great, but I think torque could do it. The car models in this game don't look like it's too many polys, but the terrain and the dirt kick is really good in this game. How the game looks and the detail really depends on how well you make it. What textures you use, models, animation type, if you take use of good alpha in your particle for the dirt, if you make good particles. These all can either make a great game, or a crappy one. Really, the choice is yours what you want to make and how much time you want to spend on it.
