Cool water reflection

by Cory Anderson · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 08/07/2007 (9:06 pm) · 6 replies

I found this screenshot in the Torque 1.5 collection. I was wondering, how is the reflection and water specularity achieved? I have played around with the options and have been able to get close to the cool specularity, but I can only get the water to reflect an environment map, and not active reflecting. Any ideas?

That's not stock TGE water, it's a custom shader that was added into the engine. The modernization kit features such a water shader and there's also a separate water shader resource available.

Is the TGE water upgrade the same shading engine that TGEA uses?

Nope. It is a hack to allow some nice new features into TGE. TGEA's renderer was completely re-written from the ground up with new tech in mind.

So would you consider it worth integrating? Or does it cause too many bugs right now?

It depends on what you need and how many graphics cards you have to test it on. It's a great resource, as is the Modernization kit, but it would take some stress testing across cards before a production release.
