WoW-like texture painting - how is it done?

I'm playing World of Warcraft - not very often, but sometimes. What I noticed...that cartoonish style. It's kinda simple, but yet very beautiful and detailed. I tried to find tutorials on how to create such textures, but I cannot find any. Can someone help me out? Are they done with photoshop only or do the artists use some kind of texture generator? Or do they simple take a pencil and create a sketch, scan it and add some color? Any help is appreciated...
Unfortunately I cannot attach any sample textures to this thread (copyright!), but for those who need some examples:
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3

Hmmm...sounds like I have to move my lazy (censored) once more ;) I wonder if this can be done without a graphic tablet...I cannot afford one.

so basically not because you have a tablet you can draw better, thats not the case... you can be as good with a mouse ,tablet or trackball if you master the device in equal measure...
hint: a wireless laser mouse is a good choice too.

A drawing tablet is just an interface... its just basically a mouse in the form of a pen and the mouse pad and screen representation is the tablet.. it doesnt bring anything special .. its matter of with which tool are you better with, i feel myself more comfortable with a ordinary mouse than with a table.. but people that are more comfortable with the classic style of drawing may found tablets easier ... the problem is that to draw maybe nice but to find and click menus and windows its a little bit tricky mostly if the pen is not working in mouse mode.so basically not because you have a tablet you can draw better, thats not the case... you can be as good with a mouse ,tablet or trackball if you master the device in equal measure...

Cant disagree more, a good drawing tablet gives you so much more of an advantage over trying to paint with a mouse. Its far more natural and flows better, plus you get a better feel of the painting with sensitivity etc.
You can be good with a mouse but in general the user with a tablet would produce better results imo.

Real skin tone is compose of hundreds of shades of color in real life, dont be fool by white, black, yellow, red you actually build up the layers of color to get the right skin tone. Cartoony texturing is a simplification of the same process only using less colors.
You have to think about the way light falls onto your drawing, in WOW they prbly shade the chars textures as if the light source is directly facing them I think. and finally a example of the entire process done by a talented artist on youtube. Using only a Mouse and MS paint :)) hopes that helps you out

Since your focusing on texturing part, the texturing in WOW resembles the manga style of coloring lineart. you got your basic tones "skin color" and 2 darker shades to represent the shade of muscles and the shadows cause by the way light falls onto the object.
