Tge Or Tgea?

by Scott Roberts · in Torque Game Engine Advanced · 07/26/2007 (11:18 am) · 6 replies

We're looking into using Torque for a pseudo-RTS, and are interested in the differences between TGE and TGEA. Some of the improved rendering features of TGEA are less important to our gameplay.

Do any of the tools such as ArcaneFX, Showtool Pro or the RTS Starter Kit work with TGEA?

Does the maturity and documentation of TGE outweigh the advances of TGEA in regards to getting a game up and running?

Thanks,
Scott

@Scott -

If advanced rendering and Atlas terrain aren't that important to your design, you probably want to go with TGE. Later on, you can integrate the Modernization Kit for a graphical enhancement to TGE. It's free btw.

AFX currently works out of the box with TGE. The TGE/A port is being worked on out, but isn't quite released yet.

RTS Starter Kit requires some extra work to get compatibility with both TGE 1.5 and TGE/A. More so with TGE/A.

If you are new to programming, game creation, or Torque in general, you will have an easier time using TGE. The Advanced portion of TGE/A alludes to both the enhancements and the learning curve/complexity.

I agree with Michael. If the Advanced features of TGEA aren't crucial to your project, then you're probably best served going with TGE.

Does the Atlas terrain work now?

Thank you for the advice. It's good to know that we can eventually migrate to a more advanced renderer.

Atlas terrain has worked for a long time. Are you having trouble with it?
