Mecha game

by GAMEHACK3R · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 07/23/2007 (6:55 pm) · 17 replies

Bigger is better , how could a giant robot that can teleport(Heroic age) destroy an entire colony in one shot (gundam) and morph into a fighter jet (macross) NOT be cool.

what are some things you would like to see/do in a mech game?

Blow up stuff.

And apart from that, I think the best feature of MechWarrior 4 was how much you could customise your robots. Definately in favour of extreme customisability. Also, with today's computers and graphics, it's not unfeasible to do stuff like blow bits from an eney robot, rather than just upping their damage level until they explode.

Sorry to be a stickler, but mechwarrior 2 and 3 had far better customisation.

They just do, nothing personal ^_^

Lol, im here a few hours and already spreading the Faselei goodness ^_^

Also, perhaps a bit off topic, but underated Lucus Arts game 'Metal Warriors' and Front Mission Gun Hazard, both for the snes, just to list a couple of classic mech games.

@GAMEHACK3R: Let me know your feelings on Faselei, my current project is a multiplayer clone of said game, so all input is welcome. ^_\\

Quote:with today's computers and graphics, it's not unfeasible to do stuff like blow bits from an eney robot, rather than just upping their damage level until they explode.

It was done in 1994. Not only were the mech's covered in texture maps (as opposed to mechwarrior's solid colors initially) you could customize them, would see it on the battlefield, could have parts blown off (and see it on the battlefield) AND collect the enemy's weapons/mech's you didn't destroy completely. :)

so by now, in theory, we should have something with the quality of doom 3 graphics & agia physics no problem. Nobody just wants to code it. :) (big robot games kinda died down after games went from nerds with imagination to mainstream).

I'd LOVE a full scale mech game were there are other things on the battlefield. Kinda like "Quake Wars" & "BF2142" (forget the exact name), but bigger mech's. the 70/80 meter tall mech's. Tanks. Power armour. foot soldiers. Things from the Battletech source books like soldiers grabbing on to mech's legs & planting explosives.

it's ambitious and most likely wouldn't sell because it's not simple enough (like the battlecruiser series in amount of control you have), but would be awesome. :D

Huh. Never knew that about Earthsiege. Ah, well. What you describ would be the ultimate mech game :D

Oh - I forgot something. I want physics! Sounds stupid, but I can't remember he number of times in Mechwarrior when I've run my mech, at full speed, into an enemy mech or a wall or something, and stopped dead. Why don't I explode? Why can't I use an Atlas to crush Arguses underfoot?

Sounds way cool ^_^. Look at Steel Lancer Area International on the PS2, a better customisation system (in my mind) than armored core.

But on the topic in gerenal, Mechwarrior 3 is the bench march. Customistion, scale combat system where all on the nail, so anything done now should be the same or more so (if your going for a western realisem mech style, as aposed to the more humaniod but far less realistic aprouch). I persoanly feel armored core loses its way, but its got such a following that its hard to knock it.

Perhaps, if anyone here is seriosly going to make a mech game, not just talking good ideas, find one of the battletech/mechwarroir simulators. Play it, get shaken about, try the imposabul control system and that wile give you the best feel for driving, what is quite simply' an 80ton peace of steel.

I guess im not making a point here, but in terms of scale, see (as plugged above) Front mission: Gun Hazard and Metal Warriors. Both 2d, both platform baced but with a fantastic sence of scale.

If you have a chuck-e-cheeze near you they may have a mini-mech simulator. mine does.

someone is planning a full scale mech mod for UE3: http://www.clancoregames.com/ they were working on a real sequel to Starsiege but ended up dropping it (with people, mech's & vehicles).

I loved Steel Battalion for it's control system. I'm really not expecting anyone in the near future to be attempting the same kinda thing they did, but that to me was a near-perfect western mech style simulator.

There's also an arcade mech game that had two booths next to one another that was a nice game. Controls were based on two joysticks and a few buttons on the joysticks used in combinations, pretty fun and straight forward with options of more complex movements.

I personally like the feel of the western style mech games normally, but I aesthetically like quite allot the Japanese mechs. Perhaps having a balance of different model types and slightly tweaked controls to fit the type of mech?

I would like to see a army of robots taking on another army, a game that allows you to interact with hundreds of teamates in war, somthin kike starwars battlefront

I would like to see some simulated realism in mech games. Much like ww2 online, the game should calculate damage based upon calibre of gun fired, projectile velocity, projectile weight, armor slope, shell splinter direction, armor thickness, driver position, vulnerable systems position on the vehicle fired upon etc. But I havent seen that kind of detail in many of the tank simulators even so I am low on hopes. Whenever I see a health meter I feel like throwing that game in the garbage bag... I think those factors would add a stress factor to a game and that adds to the feel of the game... Strictly one reason I keep playing ww2online... You may dieon 1 lucky shot that penetrates armor next to ammo locker on a tiger but u may survive a hell of a beating because the rounds that tear apart the thin hided 232 keep missing the crew members... Then of course I would like to see a MaK game a VOTOMS game etc lol

I know this comment is a little late but...

What i always wanted to see in a mech game was fully customizable parts. For instance, you can use an arm with holding a shield with legs with wheels on the bottom, a back attachment with a rocket pack, and head attachment with radar enhancements... Every part of the mech being interchangeable and having a lot of options for each part.

While most of the games listed are H2H types I actuall go more toward things like Xenogears. Watching ID tranform Weltall and blow up Solaris was 11/10 moment for me. After recently watching Gundam 00 and seeing the new twists of seeing 00 Riser that brought into mind of having mobile armors that can combine (an idea as old as Megaman and Rush).

What would I really like to see or better yet pay for? I would say a combination of H2H with a touch of customization driven by storyline with a purpose.

your account should now have 2 extra cents :)

@Johnathan J- Oh how I feel you on this issue. Although i'm not the greatest 3d artist in the world, I am working on a project with that in mind. When I first found out about Trans-AM my face went red because it was 100% of what I wanted to do in a game so I went back to the drawing boards to reinvent the wheel.

1 year later I have everything nearly documented from mech parts using different metals which have different properties, professions that assist in the process.
ex: technician is able to modify parts (enhancer)
engineer builds mech parts (blacksmith)

and even explored zone linking and am in the middle of penciling out a way to add planet objects that link to zones so you can enter via atmosphered portals. Though it seems like i'm derailing here I do apologize since I'm a mech enthusiast.

The list of things to do and learn is very big but after our learning project is over then a small demo showing what was learned and different ways to implement things is underway. Back to work ; ;
