A few questions

by Carter Patterson · in Constructor · 07/23/2007 (7:42 am) · 10 replies

I have a few questions about torqe game constructor:

1. do you need torqe game engine or game builder to use it?
2. can you make a masive multiplayer (mmo) game on it?
3. if you can, can you make it a game you play on the browser? (internet without downloads)
4. can you use some of the things in the developer or content pack store?

Thanks.

About the author

I like to make levels for games, and I like to make games that I want to play. For me, game's aren't about having the greatest next gen graphics, it's about having fun, and I make sure all my work shows that. (of course good graphics never hurt :P )

Constructor is a tool for creating brush-based levels. It is not an engine, MMO or otherwise. You create content with it. That's it. Content. You will need an engine to actually make your game with.

Constructor is made for the Torque Game Engine and Advanced engine. As Torque Game Builder is 2D and Constructor is for the creation of 3D brush-based models, the two do not work together. You can, however, create .maps for the Quake and Half-Life engines and their ilk using Constructor.

As it is not an engine, Constructor has no browser features.

You can use Tim Aste's content packs with Constructor since they come with the .map sources.

I'd just like to point out there's no such thing as 'internet without downloads'.

I ment something like runescape, how you dont need to download it to play it.

You would have to code your own Java applet to connect to a back-end server to do that. Then you would have to make sure that every JRE in existence worked under each browser. It is *not* an easy solution.

Ok, but back to what you said earlyer, dose this mean that i'm not able to make actual games with this? TGC is just an add on for TGE?

Constructor is a level editor, like Radiant for Quake. It is not a game engine. It is not an "add-on" in that it connects to the Torque series of engines, but it is designed to create content for those engines (as well as other brush-based engines, should you choose).

You can download the demo and Constructor and get used to the workflow of creating content for the engine. That way, when you have money together, you'll be that much more experienced!

On the main menu, go to Downloads and Development Demos. Then download the product demo that you need.
