Dedicated Server Testing

I've been having troubles getting my friend to help test multiplayer to make sure my server/client commands are working properly. Instead I've been creating a dedicated server and connecting via LAN on the same computer. I'm assuming I'll get the same results as if I was connecting from a remote computer. Is this right? I'm hoping my client/server code is working right...it works fine testing on my machine using the dedicated server and a client. I'm just afraid when I finally get someone to test it that it'll be all wrong.
