For those of you who are planning to support a wide range of hardware and software you should be aware of the changes that have come with recent DirectX SDK updates.
For example, If you wish to support Windows 2000 the most recent version of DirectX you can build with is DirectX 2007 (April) - as of the June version Windows 2000 is no longer supported.
If you wish to support 1.0 pixel shaders the most recent version of DirectX you can build with is DirectX 2007 (February) - as of the April version, support for shader 1.0 was dropped and only shader 1.1 is supported.
Now, for those of you who are going for a cutting-edge FPS game or the like, this info is not of much value. But if you are making a small 2D game, or an RTS that wants to appeal to the widest possible audience then you need to pay attention to the version of DirectX you are building with. Otherwise, you may find that you have a nightmare support/debugging issue on your hands.
