TGB crashes on startup (Fixed)

(reposting from the public forum after someone kindly told me how to get here)
Hi all, I just licenced and downloaded the INDIE licensed version of TGB yesterday (and the adventure starter kit). (This is version 1.1.3, though I've tried uninstalling and installing the beta instead with the exact same results)
I'm having an issue where TGB seems to crash on initially loading - it doesn't throw up a crash dialog, but after launching I get an hourglass for roughly five seconds... and then nothing at all. No splash screens, no interface, no popup telling me anything has crashed.
So I assumed I had some weird stuff going on with drivers. In order to make *sure* everything was cleared off my development machine, I did a reformat/reinstall of XP. Updated all drivers to the most recent possible - exact same symptoms.
Here are the machine specs:
OS: Windows XP, SP2, all updates installed
CPU: Core 2 Duo - ~2.4 Ghz
Motherboard: Asus P5N32-SLI SE
GPU: NVIDIA 7950 GX2
4GB RAM
I can upload my dxdiag file if needed - it's a bit long to post here in its entirety.
Any and all help is appreciated.

(I've been told to look for a file named "console.log" but haven't been able to find it anywhere on my drive using Windows' built in search... Can anyone clue me in to where this file ought to be, so I can at least verify that it actually isn't existing?)
EDIT2:
I now have an actual error to look at. It was one of the standard Windows crashes, and when I went to show more details the following was shown:
Error signature:
AppName: tgb.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: dinput8.dll
ModVer: 5.3.2600.2180 Offset: 000168be
Which looks like some sort of issue with DirectInput. I'm going to take a closer look at all input devices connected to my computer, but I'm a bit confused by this one.
EDIT3:
I have TGB starting up now. I think I figured out the problem, and it's idiotic (and has nothing to do with TGB). I have a USB nerf rocket launcher attached to my PC, and its existence (in spite of the fact that I hadn't installed any drivers for it) was causing DirectInput to throw up.
I'm getting into TGB now, so hopefully no responses needed anymore.

(I had originally missed it because the device was plugged into a USB port on my keyboard, and I had forgotten about those ports...)
In any case, it all seems to be working fine now. I'll just blame it on Microsoft. Everything is easier that way ;-)
Now for the easy stuff. Like learning how TGB works and learning Torquescript. >_<

That sounds like a totally feasible explanation of why DInput is failing. I don't really have the directx background to know - I know just enough to guess that if dinput8.dll is the cause of the crash, to double check everything I have plugged into the PC.(I had originally missed it because the device was plugged into a USB port on my keyboard, and I had forgotten about those ports...)

1. They make USB controlled Nerf rocket launchers? 2. Where do I get one?
3. Right now.
