Mars Textures

by Brian Irvin · in General Discussion · 06/09/2007 (7:16 am) · 13 replies

I am realy looking for opinions here for htis post. In my game project mars has been terraformed and colonized. I am trying to figure out how to make the sand textures or dirt textures because not all parts of the planet has grass and trees. So about what color should the dirt and sand textures be and the ambient color.

Id say start with looking at www.nasa.gov and try doing some research, there have been 3 rovers and 2 orbiters that have taken extensive photographs and color film footage of the redplanet. start there, there is a image area in the media section, in addition you might even be able to find a3d map that would allow you to see a fly through, that might be useful in creating already existing land features.

You should look at the ESA's pictures from Mars Express: www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Mars_Express/

I would've thought that the sandstorm environment included with TGE1.5 would be a good starting point?

Actually i agree with Steve, that would be a very good starting point for a mars enviroment.

Brian: Try the NASA website (www.nasa.gov).
I bought 1.5 I figured it came with sandstorm environment since it displayed it. I haven'treally played it since I've been using TGEA. Hmmm thats shocking (wouldn't that be false advertising).

maybe you can start out with the demo.
If your thinking of a mars environment try the TA combo pack 2. there is some good stuff in there for environments.

Just another thought: Maybe the sandstorm environment is in 1.5 and either your missing it or it has to be created.

No i have it and i realy didnt think about it ill probaly use it. But not all of mars will be a "desert" or dusty. Some spots will have grass and trees in small areas. Also Sataurns moon "titan" will have an atmostphere in my game because we teraformed it also, my question wouldnt it be cold even during the day because of the distance

I would still suggest TA combo pack 2:
for two reasons:
1) the work is incrediable, it has alot of good textures sky boxes and alot of other stuff that may help for this kind of development

2) It will save you alot of time. If your doing this on your own or even with another partner it could take a year or more to do all the stuff thats in this pack.

Brian, if your talking about terraformed terrain, your completely negating any atmospheric effect and natural color, and can make it any color or terrain you want. and yes standard temperature on mars is very cold. i would take some time and brush up on mars planetary geography if your going to ask question. As for Titan, well again if its terraformed its up to you, but id suggest a wetland marshy terrain, if any. check the Huygen probe data for more information on Titan, i think thats the one they dropped , there is several videos and such regarding that on www.nasa.gov just look under missions and planets should be easy to find on their site.

I added a link for you to use, im curious id like to see a screen shot when you get get one to show of you mars landscape. :)

www.nasa.gov/missions/current/index.html

i put the cassini probe, which is currently orbiting saturn and its moons, and also a mission listing so you can zoom in on specific solar system items and mission data, there is also past and future mission data that you can browse through.

There are a large number of resources available, some very basic and other not so. One I've looked into is the MOLP(think thats the right name) project which had built an database of hight scale images maps of MARS,for my game.

Yes the others are right in pointing you to the MARS Rover project for texture images. You'll have to get a lot of resource images to have a good reference pool of textures. This will require checking out other sites other than NASA(as NASA doesn't host some of the better ones).
