A beginners worry

by Witty1982 · in Torque Game Engine · 06/09/2007 (6:10 am) · 46 replies

I have no experience with programming of any kind. I have recently purchased The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque. I am purchasing a high performance PC and advanced torque game engine very soon. Do I stand any chance?

Thanks

Hey, Thanks Berserk, your help is greatly appreciated! :D

Yeah, I thought Torque script might be like a "remote" to the actual engine, I'm happy to step in at his point and just get a feel for it though :) I understand now that if I want to get any deeper than that I will have to learn more about programming from the ground up!

Thanks again (and for the helpful links!),

Alex.

@Witty: stop worrying and just do it. It's hard at first but will get easier with time.

@Berserk: was joking.

Bah.. those codesampler tutorials are way out of date.. doesn't anyone have any tutorials for the 1.5 version? Why is torquescript so slim on tutorials and references? I can find a ton for XNA and c++/C## of course.... but not torque - a very hard way to learn the language.

Yes and you can forget torque if you need tutorials... honestly GG simply don't have the time/ dont want to make some updated tutorials, 90% of the tutorials are for versions 1.3 (some 1.4) but none for 1.5 and the resources are mostly garbage for neewbies... Honestly you have more tutorials and documentation on OGRE (that is freeware by the way)... The only thing in garage games where you can find really usefull docs / tutorials is TGB/TorqueX (and I dont know about TSE).

TGB even with 1.5 is outdated and since its NOT for beginners because of the por docs/tutorials, maybe is better you try something else with more updated tutorials and suport.

Just my 2c.

It is true that the documentation is lacking. I'm baffled why GG doesn't hire a single full time tech writer who could, over time, make a real difference.

Nonetheless, there is NO OTHER complete, cross platform, scripted game engine which supports so many different types of games--which is why I use it. Also between the documentation that is there and the forums, it is quite possible to learn. I learned TS, so anybody can. I'm not that bright.

Actually, in the case of torquescript specifically...come on...it's not that hard. It's not nearly as complicated as, say, bash or csh scripting, for example. Update for 1.5 for TS? What does that even mean? Aren't ALL the updates to the engine and not TS per se?
