How do I open certain ports win server 2003???
by Steven J Hammans · in Technical Issues · 06/02/2007 (10:18 am) · 22 replies
Hello, I have been having trouble setting a master server and client up .... but after many sleepless nights I found out that all the coding, scripts and files where correct...the problem was with the ports on the server not being open, as i have just connected to the server using port 25 which i knew was open...but alas this port has other uses and therefore cannot be used for the game.
So my question is how do I open ports on my dedicated server running windows 2003???
thank you
Steve

Unless I'm missing something here?...Go to the address of your router (from the server), there you can access it to open the ports you need. Should be that simple? Hope that helps.

Btw: router address is a local address usually like: 192.168.0.245 but I'm sure it depends on the router.

as i said im new to this networking stuff but i believe that your talking about ' routing and remote access'
there is a section for 'ip routing'
i think i have to setup a NAT or somthing
but im not really sure

I'm no expert here, but if it's simply setting ports you should be able to do this easily once you get into the router. So that's where you need to start.

NAT is a layer for security and you'll probably disable it rather than set it up? I wouldn't worry about that yet until you get ports configured. But, First find the documention to the router your using, most everything you need to know should be in there. You can try and type- http://192.168.0.1 into your servers browser and see if that's the routers address, if it is, you'll need a password if that's been set up or you'll see set up options, etc. and should be good to go....I'm no expert here, but if it's simply setting ports you should be able to do this easily once you get into the router. So that's where you need to start.

"Thank you for contacting customer support. The ports that you have listed, are not blocked by our data center firewalls"
So what do you suggest I do now? as the ports that i am trying to use are 'apparently ' open...
But when i try to connect through them no luck...I used telnet to test the ports out and received the message "Could not open connection to host, on port xxxxx: Connect failed'

Thanks Eric but the thing is i pay for the dedicated server from a hosting company who will not give me access to the router, So i mailed them stating what ports i need open and this is what they sent me :-"Thank you for contacting customer support. Can you ping the server to make sure it's running? Open the DOS Command Prompt and type your servers address, for example "ping yourserver.com" or ping 192.168.1.100".
Good luck.

The only thing I would think is a firewall on the client but, you have that off...I haven't a clue? Can you ping the server to make sure it's running? Open the DOS Command Prompt and type your servers address, for example "ping yourserver.com" or ping 192.168.1.100".
Good luck.

Whats a VPN?... do I have to set one up?

Are you adding the port# to the address when connecting with telnet?
06/03/2007 (6:47 am)
Virtual Private Network, encryption and other security mechanisms to ensure that only authorized users can access the network and that the data cannot be intercepted. Are you adding the port# to the address when connecting with telnet?

secondly i use telnet to test my specific port numbers my.ip.goes.here porthere
so yes i added the port number to the address but it cant connect :(
I have used a port scanning software which found 6 open ports those are the standard ones the rest are closed
so i still cannot work out where to open the ports that i want i was thinking it could be in the VPN but from what you have said thats just for extra security
so I don't know what to try next :(

I was really hoping someone else would offer some help because I have no idea. I feel your pain, wish I could help more.

Well I guess you should set up the VPN, it could be that you do need to set one up. Network wizard should do it?, but I don't know how that works for the server that's outside your home network? Sorry.I was really hoping someone else would offer some help because I have no idea. I feel your pain, wish I could help more.

Well now the registry has got corrupted so I cant even activate all the services I need to get the VPN working :( and god knows how im going to sort the registry out but thanks for trying :p
If I ask my hosting company to reinstall from scratch i guess with the way things have been going they will probably want stupid amounts of money to do it
- piece of advice
-=Make sure you do a LOT of research on your hosting company BEFORE you order a server with them, I thought I had... but the company im using is of no help whatsoever=-
