Korean roof (take 2)

Still working on a Korean roof... This one is a gate (from the inside of what will be a walled city, with prefab stairs to get up to the 2nd floor). You can go into the rice-paper bound room upstairs, and there are halls inside the gate where guards await unwelcome visitors... and of course, snipers from the 2nd floor to further deter unwanted entry... It plays well so far, and should be fun when the whole city is done.

The new hidden surface removal features of Constructor 1.02 exports really helped. This is 100% constructor-built, with extensive use of Jaimi's test extrude tool. I still have some minor issues to work out, with the model -- but hey -- it works.

I'm *borrowing* textures from the demo for now -- I'm working on some custom textures based on photos of Korean temples. This project has been fun...

Can you please tellme how you get the roof to look that way? I guessing that is rotated cylinders and wall right?

O and yeah excellent work!

I'm sure there's a better way to go about this (I'd love to hear any ideas), but here's what I did:

Corners:
For the curve on the top of the corners I started with 1/2 of a rotated arch. I cut away chunks of it using different views until I had 1/2 of one corner, then copied and did a negative scale or rotation to get the other 1/2. Then I duplicated (copy, paste, rotate... negative scale where necessary) the corners to all 4 sides...

Lower part of roof: I extruded and used the knife for the rest of the lower part of the roof. (Jaimi's extrude tool rocks.)

Upper part of the roof. I cut away at a rotated cube to get the top of the roof.

Wooden beams. I used arches again (stretching, moving vertices, knife, etc) to get the curved wood on the top. I copied it and rotated it to get the wood down the ~45 degree sides towards the corners, then used some more extruding and cutting with the knife...

and that was the roof...

The rest was easy -- just arches, cubes, and a prefab wall with stairs to the side. I used cylinders for the poles and "fencing" at the top, and added thin cubes for the rice-paper between a frames of thin wooden cylinders. Added some light sources... Worked on the first draft of the textures, downloaded the latest version of Constructor, changed some of the export settings, and exported to a test level...

I'm going to work on the smoothing and stuff to make sure the roof looks a little better. I'm working on some custom textures. There was leak by some rice paper that I'll fix. I'm also removing the 2nd bar from the top for the "fence" around the balcony to make it easier to shoot down at intruders.
