Detail brush not working

After setting a few brushes to detail I noticed in-game that the detail brush still cuts neigbouring brushes., why why why?
Place a box/crate on the ground and set it to detail, compile and go in-game. When you put the camera inside the crate there is no floor below it. Now that tells me that the box/crate has cut the ground into shreads but the whole idea of setting the box/crate to detail is to avoid the ground being cut up.
Am I missing something because this is not how detail works from previous experince with Quake based builds. I am using TGE 1.5 and the included map2dif_plus.exe

I read in the change list many map2dif_plus.exe fixes have been made, I hope this solves the problem.
