Self illumination with masked areas (3DSmax)

I've managed to create a self-illuminated object using the advanced materials tutorial in the TDN.
Now I'm trying to make an object where the applied texture only has certain areas self-illuminated.
I"ve tried making a mask and putting in the 'self-illumination' slot for the material but it did work - although I'm not really sure how its supposed to be done.
Will TGE 1.5 support self-illuminated materials with masked areas?
If so, how do I do this in 3DSmax?
