Question to TGE Owners about RTS & TBS

by Stewart Trezise · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 05/18/2007 (7:08 pm) · 2 replies

Hello there,

I'm considering buying TGE, and the RTS script modification, with the intention of developing
a Turn-Based-Strategy, and I'm curious as to how well suited TGE is for such a project.
I myself am only the 3D Artist, my designated coder is learning the ropes but a resourceful
lad who'll pick anything up - I would like to know if it will be worth his time.

The game would play like a 3D X-Com or JA2. In fact - anyone ever play Silent Strike 2? That
was a fully 3D TBS, and underrated if you ask me. Multiplayer-oriented (AI in TBS would be
tricky to do well) with 5-minute turn limits (or less) online.

Ideally I'd like to know how tricky it is to do things like troop & equipment selection screens
before a match, I'm sure anything is possible but it'd be great to know how big a supply of
coffee and smokes my coder will need :P

If anyone can help me out here I thank you sincerely,

Hi Stu

Its been a while since I've investigated this stuff but I was looking at Torque for a similar project.

For our project we had developed a table top wargame that simulates historical battles quite well (Pretty much anything from 10,000BC to 1450AD, we have other tweaked systems that work in later periods). I looked at Torque and the RTS kit to see if it fulfilled our requirements.

The short answer is yes, Torque will do the job, you don't need the RTS kit to do it. However for the price it isn't a bad investment, I found it useful in giving me ideas on how to modify classes to suit our requirments.

If you search the forums there are some threads on making Torque turn based. Which may give you some ideas.

Cheers

I'll chime in with Brad here. I was sceptical, but the RTS kit was a good investment. It gave me really nice ideas, especially so for cameras and simple terrain collisions for RTS units. They also got some pretty cool movement, not too advanced, but made me go in the right direction with interpolation and all that.
