Windows Update is the antigod (VC++2005)

I'm trying to set up my laptop so I can build Torque on it. I downloaded VC++2005, and tried to install it. The installer told me I needed Windows XP Service Pack 2. I went to Windows Update's website, and it led me a merry dance taking several hours (not including its overnight slog to install the stupid updates). I restarted my computer the next morning, and when I logged on I was informed that my version of Windows XP is no longer secure, and that I needed to download the Windows XP Service Pack 2. Already lost in the deep pits of despair, I let it take me back to the Windows Update website, which promptly failed to do anything useful. It hangs on the page after clicking Express (reccomended), with that stupid green loading bar.
Can someone help me? Is it me, my laptop, Windows Update, the world in general... what's wrong?

I spent a couple days with a laptop that was kinda in the same situation. Something in IE was screwed up and it wouldn't let any updates take (Day 1). I ended up doing a fresh install and all the assorted patches (by this time I had a lot of updates downloaded already, so that was a time saver) and life was forever good (Day 2).
