Looking for someone to write a DTS exporter for modo

by Dion Burgoyne · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 05/09/2007 (11:54 am) · 7 replies

Greetings all,

I was hoping to find someone who could write a DTS exporter for modo, we've gotten several inquiries about it and would like to get this going as soon as possible. I can comp you a copy of it for your time. Write me at dion at luxology.com

Thanks!

I thought about it a while back but since I use Lightwave as well, I never thought about it too seriously. Especially since Modo has no animation support. I love Modo, though. I use it to model first and then LW to animate. The Blender exporter would be a strong start since it is in Perl or Python (I cannot remember which), though.

Great job on an awesome, extremely intuitive app!

The coder would need modo to code and test the plugin......soooooo, why would they want an extra copy ?
Even if someone did this to resell the comp'd modo, they would lose 30-40% off of it's face value.

I would believe it to finalize the gain from plugin for $400 with good luck on your side.
I am sure that your business can make a better offer than that.

Yes, I was assuming as much, and to supply them with the comp'd copy, SDK, and Beta access to facilitate the writing of the plugin. The hope was that someone would be willing to write this, as it was requested by a number of Torque users... I am simply attempting to enable this process. modo can already export to every program that can export to DTS, and this plugin is to be provided for free (like the DXF, Collada, .MAP, .mdl, .STL etc... exporters that we already have).

Best of luck!

Dion,

I'm a happy Silo 2 user, but Modo has always intrigued me. It looks like a great app.

I have to disagree with Eric (above). Your company's offer of a free version of the app in exchange for a working exporter sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

As for an exporter, a short-term *solution* would be for someone to write a macro/script/whatever telling Modo to run obj2dts.exe with Modo-specified parameters. It's a command-line app that works great for exporting static shapes into the Torque object format. Getting that working would probably be easy for some of the scripting and coding gurus in these parts.

Adding all of that functionality into a true built-in exporter is a different matter, of course, but there are a few people around here (like Matt Summers) who have extensive knowledge of the DTS format and lots of experience writing exporters for various apps. Here's an e-mail address for Matt . . .

Yep, that kind of script is very easy to do. But it would be nice to be able to support modo's higher features. I'll contact Matt and see if he's interested. Thanks!

""and to supply them with the comp'd copy, SDK, and Beta access to facilitate the writing of the plugin.""

ah, brilliant.... I am sorry that I came across in an abrupt manner but I was thinking "why would someone do work in return for a second modo". I didn't realize that you would extend so far with good will.

Good luck
