From the demo on....

Hello I recently purchased TGEA and I am having a problem moving on from the compile to ... well... anything.
I grabbed this:
www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=resource&page=view&qid=11876
Which is the Multi-Gametype FPS starter kit Version 1.1
I cant get anything but the dos window: (sceenie)

I was able to compile the demo in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 but I really don't see a part where I can move around and test anything in a first person type play... I cant move anything in the game and I cant load missions.
I followed up to this point in the documentation:
www.garagegames.com/docs/tge/general/apbs05.php
But the bat files don't get anywhere. I point the bat to the exe and the mission using the direction in the tutorial but the directories are different. I figured that out and I am still lost. Could the tutorial be out of date and I need to look elsewhere for a starting point. I got Constructor and Torsion. I feel like I got everything but the start point.
One important note... if it wasn't obvious... Im a complete noob in this place and I feel like the information sources are bit scattered and allot of them are dated.... Id love a bit of guidance here.
Thanks for your time

I have recently got TGEA and understand where you are coming from. Your best bet is to run from the TGEA.exe first and load up the demo mission.
Once you have done this, as Aaron mentions, hit F11 to bring up the editor, then, from the menu choose New -> New Mission.
This will drop you into a vanilla mission in FPS mode.
Over the last few days I have had TGEA, I have made more progress by learning how to use the editors whilst cross-referencing the scripting in Torsion, especially examining the .mis files that I have built.
Anyway I am available on MSN Messenger (email in my profile) if you need any help (any I can bug you for help when you get good :) ).

You can also drop a crossbow and some ammo in the world, pick them up and starting shooting things, so some things that exhibit FPS style action do exist in the engine.

Cool, I actually mulled around the source code and script for several days before realizing this. You can also drop a crossbow and some ammo in the world, pick them up and starting shooting things, so some things that exhibit FPS style action do exist in the engine.

I am having some newer problems tho:
I DLed VS2005 and I utilizing TGEA.
I followed these setup instructions:
tdn.garagegames.com/wiki/TGEA/InstallVS2005
I get errors that the search landed me here:
tdn.garagegames.com/wiki/Torque/vs2k5
That seems out of date and like I should not be there for any reason.....
I tried to build:
TGEA SDK.SLN and the Torque Game Engine Advanced and I get no exe to come out. I got the following errors:
www.map-craft.com/staff/G/G_posting/BuildLog.htm
Thats the entire error log.

Great! That helps some. I went looking on how to do that myself after you said so. Thanks!I am having some newer problems tho:

Any thoughts here? I hate to bump my thread but perhaps it slipped by. I am having real problems getting a compile here.

Any reason you need to re-build?
First that log looks clean and you should have a DEBUG version sitting in the example folder, which is in the same folder that the vs2005 project is in (one level up i.e c:\TGEA_SDK\Engine_backup\example\tgea_DEBUG.exe or w.e. you named the output). Not sure that you want a debug build though.
When you download tgea, you should have an example folder with the RELEASE version of the exe already compiled for you. Not sure why you're re-compiling a clean install...

That screenshot above looks like your running in DEDICATED server mode, since your only window open is the console output. i.e this: torqueDemo -dedicated -mission fps\data\missions\dmexample.mis... Pretty much just run it in single player mode by just double clicking the exe.Any reason you need to re-build?

Once you're in the 3D world, you can hit F11 to enter world edit mode. That will let you drop objects into the game or move them around.
Or, if you want, you can hit F10 and enter the GUI editor mode to tinker with the user interface stuff.
It's surprising that Zod's Multi Gametype kit isn't working for you. If you've installed it somewhere by itself (not into an existing project), then it should work without any problems. If I can ask, what are your system specs?
