MMO Crazy competition

by Andy Hawkins · in General Discussion · 05/01/2007 (6:54 pm) · 6 replies

No offence intended but isn't making an MMO a bit ambitious for a game competition? Indeed making an MMO is a large undertaking for any dev team without the overbearing deadline of 12 months.

Making a single player game is very ambitious in itself.

I don't understand why so many people are trying to make MMOs. Surely the cost of maintaining accounts and servers is prohibitive for most indie dev teams even if the game gets off the ground. Content provision is a nightmare to start with, even before the game is created.

It's to overwealm and confuse aspiring developers of course, i mean, nothings bigger then and MMORPGXYZ game! Making one means you're the coolest kid on the block too.

Yes it's a rush to create an mmorpgomgthenextbestgameever! I'm making one because i enjoy the genre and because it might actually make a buck or two for the devs. Keeping up the servers for anyone is an undertaking, even commercial games, but a-net (as well as a few others) have set a new level of possibilities for even indies to grasp with no monthly fee. Bandwidth prices keep dropping to!

Nothing wrong with trying your hand at something. You might find its up your alley and exactly what you need and want to do as an indie, on the other hand you might find that you eyes were bigger than your stomach and bit off more than you can chew. Either way its an invaluable learning experiance and there's nothing that says the right indies with the right team cannot pull it off.

Well as a content pack provider - well I've done one ;-) - let me know what content you guys need and I will tailor mini packs to assist. Good luck with the MMO's!!!!
