Dragonball Z MMORPG?

I'm posting this mainly to get an idea of the the response to the concept.

DBZ is very popular in America at this point, with most people either loving it or hating it (and those who've never heard of it). A game like this would use the same sort of system as the 3d Gundam games (I believe). There's another "giant robot" game out there with an appropriate fighting system, but I fail to recall it.

The game screen would have a map, chat box, stat box, health bar and ki bar. Health is obvious: the player's ability to withstand attacks. When it is depleted, the character respawns without his equipment (besides humans and cyborg androids, which only lose advanced equipment, for obvious reasons explained later.) The ki bar is used for energy attacks, transformations, and special abilities. This regenerates and is the basis for the character's battle system. Depleting it is very dangerous.

Stats would include intelligence (INT), ki (KI), strength (str), health (HLT), power level (PL) and influence (IFL). INT is used for solving puzzels and movement. The greater it is, the faster you are mentally and physically. KI is used for the KI meter on-screen. The greater this stat is, the more you have to use. STR is used for physical and technique strength. The greater it is, the stronger you are physically, and the stronger your energy attacks are. HLT is used for your health meter. The greater it is, the more you have. PL is the measurement of your cumulative power. This stat does not affect gameplay - it is only a measurement. IFL allows one to negotiate better prices at shops, and can be used to make allies out of enemy AI. The greater this becomes, the less money you will spend, and more AI races will be at your disposal to fight or befriend.

More on PL and stats: The typical level system of 1 to 100 would be replaced by one of about 1 to 1,000,000,000. As it can be assumed, levels will not be hard at all to advance for most races (aside from the technologically dependent humans). Levels (power levels) will not increase stats. Rather, levels will simply be the total of stats. (100 STR, 100 KI, 100 INT would equal a power level of 300.) Stats themselves will increase based on their usage. The more you fight, the grater fighting stats become. Solving puzzels and other plot-based, non-fighting training methods will also increase INT and IFL, as they are non-battle stats.

Races would be Human, Saiyan, Changling, Android and Namkeian. Humans would be the backbone of the world, composing most of society, including marketing and trade. They would be the ones concerned with amassing fortunes to purchase equipment that puts them on par with the other races.

Saiyans would be the most typical. They advance in technique and skill faster, but require being near-death (about 10% of health) to advance to the next level of their race (not skill level , just transformation levels).

Changlings (Freeza, Cooler, King Kold) would not be as highly adept at skill advancement, but would possess greater intelligence (used for other parts of the plot) and and would be able to tranform when their bodies have reached a certain level of strength, with no need for being near-death. There will be no limit to how long a Changling may stay transformed, but staying transformed will have negative affects on certain quests, and attract more aggressive AI units.

Androids would be of two types: cyborg or biological. Cyborg types would have instant power but would not be able to advance in strength, only purchase upgrades. Biologicals would possess the same skill level as Saiyans and the same intellect as a Changling, but would only be able to gain new skills and power by absorbing other creatures/players. Transformations in biologicals would occur when a high amount of KI from victims has been absorbed.

Nameks possess high intelligence and influence, as well as natural fighting capability, but cannot transform or buy advanced equipment. Their power increases come from fighting, training, and fusing with other Nameks (AI only). They can also regrow lost limbs when damaged, where as other races aside from biological androids (that have absorbed a Namek) cannot. When Nameks fuse with AI (unable to fuse with players, as fusions in this race are permanent), they may either keep their current character sprite or use the sprite of the AI (for those that don't know, this is part of the storyline from DBZ, not a game idea.)

The world in which this occurs could be multiple worlds: Earth, Namek, Vegeta, etc. Money/credits are earned through helping or destroying plot creatures within the game, or PKing weaker players. This money would in turn allow humans and androids to purchase upgrades to enhance their ability to fight, and give other races the resources to leave their planet after buying or renting a ship. (The animation sequence for moving from planet to planet would be nonexistent: you would arrive at a designated landing area via map change.)

Techniques would be learned during stat development. At 100 KI, for example, one would be able to learn to fly (only through practice). Flying can also be purchased by humans and cyborg androids. At 50 KI, small energy waves can be produced. The type of these waves would depend on race and preference. At 50,000 KI, a transformation may occur. At 500,000, a second may occur.

Fusion can occur with other players, but it must be decided who will control the new character before fusion takes place (a selection menu will come up, allowing both to choose who takes control; if both do not choose the same player, fusion will not be allowed). The in-game technical measures to allow this would work this way: the person in control after fusion would add the other player's stats and abilities to his own, and the other player's sprite would dissapear temporarily and movement and selections would not be allowed. After 5 minutes (30 minutes plot-time), the players will return to normal. Permanent fusions (Potarru earrings, purchased or found) with other players are not allowed; permanent fusions with AI (through quests via the plot) are allowed though. Character sprite information will be altered after fusion: characteristics from both participants will make up the new sprite (uses an average to determine this). This may require a map reload (unsure). Fusion isn't necessary anyway, and sprite changes aren't for sure.

Transformations: These occur in no race but the Saiyans, Changlings, and biological androids.

Saiyans - They would be able to maintain transformations for a set amount of time; a timer will be on-screen during transformations. Level 1 would be the longest, with someone being able to maintain this level for about an hour before being forced to return to normal for about 5 minutes. Level 2 would last for 30 minutes, with a waiting period of 10 minutes. Level 3 would last 15 minutes, with a waiting time of 15 minutes. Level 4 (greatest level acheiveable in the original plot) would last 15 minutes as well, but have a waiting time of 30 minutes. The length of time these transformations can last can be increased from training. Advancing to level 4 would require going through level 1, 2, and 3. Each transformation requires a slight amount of ki. Saiyans have the strongest transformation set: level 1 would bring a growth of 25% in power, level 2 50%, level 3 75%, and level 4 100%. Oozaru (the giant monkey form) would not be present in the game as far as I'm concerned, as it's unnecessary. Appearances will change when a new level is obtained. At level 1, the hair turns gold, stands on end, and the eyes turn green. At 2, the hair becomes spikier, and electricity dances around the player (not a necessity). At level 3, the hair grows to the length of the knees, and the brow of the sprite stands out, with the face becoming more slender. At level 4, a tail is apparent (if not on the other levels), and the hair turns black, and red fur covers the body. (All from the show - don't blame me.)

Changlings - They will be able to transform as long as they wish and at any time they choose, provided they have enough KI and are at the appropriate PL. Transformations would be harder to acheive (more KI needed), and not as powerful as a Saiyan's. (Other stats balance this.) There will be 4 transformations in this race as well. Level 1 would increase stats by 15%, 2 40%, 3 65%, and 4 85%. At 1, height increases and body shape (horns, tail) grow longer. At 2, the head extends in length and spikes extend from the back, and posture slumps. At 3, original height and shape is returned, but the character sprite is totally purple and white, and there are no horns or non-slender material. (To understand all this you'd have to see the show.) At 4, the appearance of 3 would change to have an armor-like casing.

Bio Androids - They will require the absorption of other players and AI to advance in transformations. Transformations in Bio Androids last forever - the old character sprite is lost forever. There would be 3 transformations, with the original form being insect-like, not at all humanoid. While Saiyans have the strongest cumulative transformation system, bio androids have the most powerful single transformations (albeit harder to advance). Level 1 would advance stats by 35%, 2 70%, 3 95%. (Okay, bear with me on this part...) Appearances of transformation would be something like this: the incest-like first form would be replaced by the 1st transformation with a thin, green and black and orange creature with a tail and insect-like wings (the exoskeleton shape of the wing, not the wing itself). Level 2 would be the same, except with no wings, bulkier and taller shape, and a more human appearance. Level 3 would be the same as 2, except with wings now, no tail, and a far more human appearance.

Final notes: I imagine this sort of thing hasn't been done because the scripting may be difficuly; I'm unsure. Fusion would be a mess I imagine, so it's unnecessary. Transformations can be messy too, I imagine, but can work like this... When a player is creating a character, he or she also selects what appearance they want to have at the other levels. When the transformation occurs, the game goes back to that preset and changes the sprite. I'm not sure how feasible that is. Or, the appearance could work the same as a new weapon: when you get a new weapon, the game draws it in your hand. With transformations, the game could draw a new shape around your current sprite. The problem child of that would be the original form of the bio-android. If so, it can be dropped and the first form can be the original. This would mean that the player starts out with greater power, and transformations would yield a lot more power.

If someone could ever get a game like this going, I'd buy it on the spot, even though I'm not a big MMORPG person. I believe it would sell like crazy myself, considering its popularity. (More people enjoy the show than will admit it.) I'm pretty sure nobody will ever make it though. This may have been a thread before, but once more, I'm unsure. If so, don't bite. :p

Dragonball Z has released previous games. All were horrible games, and sold about four copies combined. As much as Dragonball Z fans claim, the market for such games are not as big as they state.

Anyway, the person who owns the license is very strict about what games it goes into. There's no chance an indie would be allowed to use it in something like a MMO unless they had a solid track record, which usually is what switches you from being an indie. The reason for this is because how horribly (financially, and for the image of Dragonball Z and it's related IP) previous games had done. Afterall, how many flops can you have before everyone writes off ever wanting a game based on the show?

What confuses me is how such a horribly slow show can have such a fervent following in 10 to 15 year old white suburban kids. There are many better shows, but this one just magically evokes the "gotta make the game/movie/card game" in so many people. I really can't explain why that is, nor can I even find something even remotely similar in the way fans react to it.

I watched one episode, and nearly fell asleep. Some robot was shooting people, and scary action-anime lines appeared with the standard sound of anime-breaking glass (you know what I'm talking about, when someone's really surprised or angry... almost sounds like breaking glass, but is a bit different) and then we got to see some midget run across the screen (looping animation mind you... probably no more than 10 frames looped) for about 3 minutes. Then... the robot goes away and comes back 10 seconds later. This time, the midget runs across the screen in the opposite direction... exact same frames. Just transposed 180 degrees to make him run in opposite direction.

Now if that's entertainment, I can't believe how lucky I was as a kid with Ghostbusters, the Smurfs, and that one show with Mr T and all his adpoted children.

Not to be rude, but I sincerely think Dragonball Z fans know how annoying their "Dragonball Z rocks man" statements are and coordinate posting on message boards in hopes of destroying modern government or something. This literally is about the 20th request for a Dragonball Z game on these boards in the past 6 months.

Like I said, people either hate it or like it, or have never heard of it. I don't hate it so I'm qualified as one who finds it entertaining. For some reason, a lot of people get very upset at the mention of it, which is why I posted the idea - not to get a game idea out perse, but to see potential consumer reaction.

I've played some of the DBZ games: most of them have the same plot, if any, and use a terrible battle interface. I have hated every one of them I've played.

For now, try ignoring the show and genre itself and look at the potential game makeup.

[edit]: I didn't pay attention to the poster before I responded. It's you, Matt... explains a lot. You hate everything though.

to matt...... I like the show, I dont know why, at times it is kinda dumb, and it even can get annoying... but if you want a show that you can sit back and watch for a half an hour, and it can completely make you forget about everything else and just give your brain a little rest, then thats dbz........ anyway, on to the main topic. I REALLY like the idea, I actualy read that entire post, and I can tell you've put a lot of thought into this one, it is by far the best design I've ever heard for a dbz game, unfortunately, theres NO chance of ever doing it, the other games do suck, and they suck hard...... I think that the game you described is probably one of the best dbz games I've ever heard of, but I just dont think it would be fun to dbz fans (not even getting into the fact that whoever owns it would NEVER let you make it)... everyone always asumes that that if someone likes a show or movie, then they will automaticaly like whatever game thats based on it (we can thank this little concept for mission impossible, britany spears danceing, and all those wonderfull marry kate and asley games).... in order for a game based off of another media to appeal to gamers, it would have to be both made well(other dbz game's flaw), still stay true to the other media, and appeal to the fans in the same way that the other media does (your flaw), some people might want to play an mmorpg based on dbz, I for one really would not..... I like dbz because of its cool fight scenes (which couldnt really be reproduced in the game), and the fact that its a break from my day where I dont really have to think at all (you have to make too many decisions and keep track of too much stuff in an mmorpg)..... sorry man, I might just be full of crap wiht this post, but its my honest opinion

I still don't understand why people still post this stuff, not to appear nasty or anything but people seem to forget that DBZ is someones property, and that person/company/entity is making a load of money off it and will sue the living hell out of your if you make a DBZ game without permission.

PEOPLE THINK BEFORE YOU MAKE THESE KIND OF POSTS IT CANNOT HAPPEN.. EVER!

That's why I said I was posting this for preference reaction, not an actual game idea. Believe me, I had that in mind.

Besides, ideas posted in this forum are never taken seriously anyway. Even if the idea is good enough to be a game, it only gets attention from other members with a little scripting knowledge. Realistically, any game idea posted here is never going to get off the table.

But anyway, like I said, I most definitely had no plans of this being made; I just wanted to see how well the concept goes over to see what parts of it are most preferable.

Matt, What really is disturbing me is this use of words you used "What confuses me is how such a horribly slow show can have such a fervent following in 10 to 15 year old white suburban kids." What exactly do you mean by this? The point I am making is why use the term "white suburban kids." Also the reason why kids/teenagers enjoy anime and dbz so much is because it shows kids what they can wish and strive to become. Anime was origionally made as comic strips called manga and evolved from there, many people got into the idea of manga/anime and thus the stuff evolved. You see many anime based tv shows in the setting of the future or some few in the past but all have heros/characters that try to be somewhat a role model so kids can look up to and try to make their lives as much the life as the show itself. Alot of anime shows have backgrounds that many do not know about such as dbz it was based on an old fabel something about a monkey and his adventures and the monkey evntually ends up stealing a monkey staff which can change shape etc. almost exactly like the show, refered as dbz. I don't normally post but please refrain from using the term "White Suburban Kids."

There is a quake 3 mod based on dragonball Z (bid for power) however, cartoon network found them and thretended to sue them for using copyrighted content. Be sure to get permission before you expand tons of effort and resources on creating this. In the end Bid for Power ended up removing dragonball Z content and ending with a rather entertaining mod that resembles DBZ.

Funimation, actually, not CN.

Minor nitpick. :)

I've watched the show for a number of years, I enjoy the aspects and the moral arc behind it all. I think it would make a fab game in a number of forms that todays technology holds. Of course you'd have to get licensing but if you had a solid demo idea down marketing would just take evangelism ;)

DB/DBZ has had the longest running cartoon series ever. Its amazing how they have kept one gigantic arc up all these years and I as a 26 year old enjoy them with my GF on a daily basis. If you drained it of 'cutsey' anime details which ravage a lot of the anime landscape and westernized the core concept for gaming I think there is room in the market for it.

Can it be done.. thats another question.. someone elses idea means you're going to get bent over on the details as well as fine points which means correcting defficiencies might not defficiencies in their eyes ;) Its a good exercise though in abstracting an idea into components since they are all there. Take that and transform it into a different package and you could run with a similiar vein of thought.

lol, I know exactly what you are talking about. Some anime is like that, but some is cool. Check out

http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/rl_cmp/animatrix_trailer_640.html..this looks sweet.

Oh, for you gamers out there that actually liked Spirits Within (myself included), Square Pictures Studio was used for the photorealistic CGI story.

I've taken a liking to Samurai Jack lately. That cartoon is cool, and has anime influence to it, but it is its own style. I remember GhostBusters! The cartoon right? I also watch Ninja Turtles, GI Joe, and then the Tick when I was in Junior High. Then of course every episode of the simpsons since they first aired.

Ive wanted to do a DBZ mod in the past myself, but theere are reasons why they suck.

You cant have have all the good and bad guys in a big dm match, like some mods.

You cant follow the story, cause everyone knows it.

And because of power diffrences in chars, making the game fair ruins it, also people would complain "Goku would so kill krilian"

So my idea changed, if i was to make one it wouldnt be anything in the time of the show.

It would be placed in the time before bardock, gokus father, on the planet vegeta, the Sayajin Civil War, or something similar.

It would be easy to make up chars, and have there powers equal enough for gameplay. None of them back at that time were Super Sayajins so mostly it would be smaller power attacks and hand to hand combat.

Leaves more to the imagination, and doesnt become another crappie dbz game ruining the cool shows reputation.

Forgett it. I was developing a DBZ RPG just for fun for about 3 years. Its just impossible and to big to do for a hobbygamer. My conept was over 65 pages long with a fontsize of 11, verdana.

Belive me, dont try because you will find out how hard it is. Just make a simple fighting game. That easyer.
