Modifying Some Abilities

I was thinking, are the character classes going to be 100% fixed, as in a knight moves at X speed and has Y health, or will there be some abiliy to customise beyond appearance.
A simple star system could be employed if further customisation was to be considered, possibly allowing a character to improve with one of their classes weapons, so it does more damage and moves quicker, or to increase strength, movement, health, whilst the system I am thinking about would not allow a significant variation, but there would be a range of abilities in which each class would sit.
For example
A knight initial stats:
Speed - 80%
Strength - 80%
Sword - 80%
Dagger - 80%
Shield - 80%
Health - 80%
You are given 4 stars to add and each star would add 10% to a given stat which would mean that some further customisation beyond the norm would be available without causing significant alteration (so you still have a good idea what you are going up against), but it would let players feel more attached to their character whilst still employing the intention of creating balanced classes that can compete adequately against each other.

yes seems good and easier to balance, it was that sort of thing I was trying to get at I just assumed that there weren't skills as such.

I think we should make it so that this setup is chosen prior to goign into the server. Prolly thought of this already but I think it would make it easier.

Should definitly be prior to connection, or atleast prior to joining, you don't want to be messing around with any stat modification in game, unless you screwed up first time round.

make the players be able to go to a weaponsmith and be able to do stuff to their weapons, like make them longer, double edged or somthing like that. Or a mage who gives them magic.

I think the classes are good enough... no sense in altering stats when they're different to begin with - it theives realism.
But minor things like getting more gold and such... that's fine, since it's not affecting fighting a great deal.

I'm against that myself... Even if it's simple and is only used outside of the server, people will eventually find a setup that will beat the other classes. Also, people will get frustrated at wanting to change their setup but having to leave and reenter to do so. Having it in the game would create too much friction and lack of realism.I think the classes are good enough... no sense in altering stats when they're different to begin with - it theives realism.

I concur on this matter, abilities should be set, when we change it so the players can altar the base value of things they will eventually be able to eventually find an unstoppale setting. Too many ways to go wron with allowing the players to change properties.

To increase Attack you must decrease Defence and vice-versa.
To increase Ranged Attack you must decrease Hand to Hand Attack and vice-versa.
To increase Defence aginst Ranged Attack you must decrease Defence aginst Hand to Hand Attack.
There would be 5 levels: Excellent, Above Average, Average, Below Average, and Terrible

why not start them out with everything at "average" and let them trade skill levels but if a person wants to change a big skill, like attack, they would have to take off defence, not a less useful skill like smimming. Wouldnt that be more balancing? i mean dont let people make all skills at superhigh levels, people would have an even ammount of strengths and weaknesses. I think these rules about modifying basic skills would balance things:To increase Attack you must decrease Defence and vice-versa.
To increase Ranged Attack you must decrease Hand to Hand Attack and vice-versa.
To increase Defence aginst Ranged Attack you must decrease Defence aginst Hand to Hand Attack.

Sounds very interesting and i keep an open mind most the time so all I can see is this would have to be tried before it can just be decided upon.

In terms of character customization what I would prefer is you get to pick say 3 skills out of 5, or maybe assign levels to some different skills. For example:
Thief:
Backstab
Hide in shadows
Cling to walls
Speed Up
Treasure Hunting (extra loot recieved)
Knight:
Equip Shield
Equip Longbow
Metal Plating
Healing Magic
Armor Penetration
Choose 2 or 3 of 5. This way we could have skills that are tailored for each class and the classes will still be pretty unique. I am a firm believer that you can "dilute" a game by adding features, even when those features sort of seem positive.
