I use Lightwave and Modo. You could use Maya or Blender as well for a traditional modeling app with DTS support.

Constructor is your key for CSG geometry. And it's free!

Like David, I use Modo for modeling and Lightwave for rigging and animation. I've just started to switch over to Maya for rigging and animation.

Blender is a vary powerful tool but give yourself time to find your way around the GUI.

Speaking of which, if anyone has the desire and ability to write a DTS exporter for modo, please write me

    Dion at luxology.com

I've tried e-mailing the guys that wrote the lightwave exporter but haven't gotten any responses back...

    Cheers!

    You're after Lightwave Dave :)

Dave, if you could write an exporter plugin for Modo you'd be the Man :)

Dion, could you tempt Dave with a free copy of Modo... ?

I use Cinema 4D to create models, export as .obj. Then using Parallels running in Coherence I use Milkshape as an exporter.

Not a fully OS X solution but it works well, Milkshape is cheap as chips and Cinema 4D is a much better modeller/texturer than Lightwave.

I never much cared for Cinema 4D. Not the features, mind you, but the interface. I could work faster in LW or Max or Maya. And now XSI. I have a friend who is a dyed in the wool 4D believer, though. His stuff looks spectacular and it works with his artflow. It crosses the grain of mine.

I would strongly recommend finding the application that works best with your artflow and has an exporter for your engine of choice.

I suppose if you use Cinema 4D you could also use Blender as your exporter - that keeps it all on one platform then :)

I've used a lot 3D programs but I keep coming back to Lightwave (and soon Maya), it suits my temperament. Modo is much like that.

You're right Dave, in the end it comes down to how you work and what feels right to you. When the opportunity comes up, you have to try as many different pieces of software as you can to find what works best for you.

Hmmm well modo doesn't do animation. So what's the point?

I suggest lightwave. it's got good support on the OSX platform.

Ever hear of Static Shapes? Trees perhaps? ;)
Modo may not be much longer without animation features but we'll see.

But you're right, for one all round app. for the price, you can't go too far wrong with Lightwave.

I actually use modo to make my .MAP files, being able to export DTS shapes as well would be a considerable bonus, especially since Constructor works pretty decently with DTS for map detail.

Either way I didn't mean to thread-jack, I started a new thread in the General Discussion forum for DTS

Blender for both .dts and the new .map. I use it and it is very easy with lots of tutorials. I would get that if I was you.

Go for Blender, of course. Don't be afraid and just try it out for some days.

Not Blender, the GUI sucks unbelievably.

Silo for modelling and Blender to convert into the DTS. As for me, Silo is cheap and powerful enough to suit my needs.

I was using Milkshape because it's very cheap and get the work done; it's unbeatable...too bad it's not for Mac

But then....The guys at my company installed 3ds max on our machines, I did the basic course and...wow...that stuff, after you get the basics, really rocks.

max rules, but I have awesome memories from Milkshape...

I worked w/ LightWave b4 and it's hard to learn, but rocks. For a Mac, I guess it's the best solution.

    Blender really sucks...

    LOL

I know of a lot of ex-Max users currently using Blender, and they say just the opposite: Max sucks most...

Modo 303 will have animation. I'm going to seriously recheck working on an exporter if the animation featureset works for DTS purposes.

Actually 301 will have animation, and item animation is supported, we had a group step up to write it, but I have yet to hear back from them as to their status. So the offer in the other forum still stands if you're up for it.
