Sounds for your games

by Alex Parker · in Torque Game Builder · 04/19/2007 (10:31 am) · 28 replies

I have just set up a new website where you can find free sounds (Creative Commons licensed), all created by myself but free for anyone to use and abuse. Theres a few gun sounds and arcade powerup sounds and a couple of soundtracks at the moment, but if anyone shows an interest I can do some custom sounds. Its only a new site but I expect to put something new on there once a week, or whenever I make something.

Check out http://www.soundportfolio.com if you're interested. This isn't a service I am selling, all the sounds are freely available for use in commercial as well as freeware projects. I'd also like some feedback and suggestions for new sounds.

BTW the latest T2D looks great! I have followed the development since the original EA release, and I am sorely tempted to make a simple arcade game... now to find the time...

Hey Alex, thanks for the SFx. Don't know if I'll use since our thing at the moment is balloons and some fantasy elements, but I'll check it out and say something.

Again, thank you.

No worries Ricardo, thanks for checking it out - if there's anything specific you might need email me, alexp1@westnet.com.au and I'll see if I can help.

These are great Alex - as an artist/programmer this kind of thing is extremely useful for me, particularly when prototyping.

Alex, these are just great -- I especially like the rolling moods track ... I can see that working with a lot of different game genre's ... maybe not in it's entirety, but most of it goes with quite a large range of possible games ...

Great job, and thanks for the contribution to the community ...

Thanks for the time you took to check it out guys, this is the kind of feedback I need to let me know I'm heading in the right direction with the project.

Music has been my hobby for many years, I had a couple of years there when I wanted to write games, but now I just want to write music for games. Most of the time I will simply write a track for my own pleasure and upload it to the site - but I am very open to requests for when I run out of ideas.

If you need something more specific and unique (ie not open source sounds) let me know and we might be able to come to an arrangement.

*shameless plug for my services*

Thanks guys!

Hey Alex

Did the hearing and here is my view. You have some really nice work here, congratulations on that. In case you are building a portfolio for contract purposes, add some menu sounds to your free offerings. That with arcade sounds can be a really nice collection for early feeling for the developers as mentioned by Conor.

I really enjoyed the power-up sounds and we'll be using some until we get final work contracted. If you are interested, I may contact you by that time since I wasn't expecting that pack to fit in the look-and-feel of our current project so I was somewhat surprised.

Keep up the good work.

I'll put menu sounds on my to-do list, and I am always interested in a work offer when the time comes.

Thanks Ricardo, by the way do you have a link to some progress shots or downloads of your game so I can see the look and feel you're aiming for?

At this moment we are no disclosing builds except to the portal producers, but once we get to beta we will since we'll have some contracting to do but I sent you an email where you can check some screenshots and game info.

Thanks

No problems Ricardo, I understand the need for confidentiality,

By the way I checked my email and didn't get your message - did you send it to alexp1@westnet.com.au?

If anyone is interested I just added a pack with 10 menu sounds.

On a side note do you think 10 sounds are enough for a single download, or should I spend more time but make packs with more sounds?

In the interest of "free stuff", the more the merrier ... in respect to your being so gracious, anything you provide is more then enough ... ;)

Thanks for all the great sounds Alex!

Just a quick update - The site was down for a few days because of DNS issues, but it's back on a new server and I've added an arcade game track for people to use in their games. Thanks again to everyone who checked out the site and emailed me.

I just wanted to know if there are any specific requests for sounds - and should I move this to the sound and music forum? I don't want to go too far OT.

Just a quick note to say there is another sample pack up - this one has more samples with more variety - 34 sounds in total - and of course all totally free to use in commercial or non profit ventures: http://www.soundportfolio.com/downloads/arcade-game/mixed-arcade-pack/details-2.php

Alex - great work on the new packs. I particularly liked the first 3 sounds in the menu pack. Very crisp.

Thanks again Conor, I'm glad you are enjoying the packs. I'll be keeping them coming, though I'll be spending more time on writing a couple of new tracks in the coming weeks, and then some new fx packs after that.

Hey Alex!

I wanted to hear some of your work, but it appears that your website is currently down.

Right now I am in the pre-alpha stages of a space shoot-em up. You can find a little info about it at the Great Games Experiment on my profile. Once work has progressed more, I may be in need of some sweet sounds.

Stay Tuned!

Hi Kevin,

I am sorry to say over the last week there have been some serious server issues with my host. Apparently the hard-drive has crashed and they are building a new server from scratch, but this means I'll have to restore from a backup I did about a week ago, and it will be later tonight or even tomorrow before I get my site back up.

In the meantime, I'm very interested in working with you on this shooter. Would you mind contacting me via email at alexp1@westnet.com.au with more details about your requirements?

Cheers

Ok I've moved the site to another server. Fingers crossed this should be the last time I have to do so.

Kevin, I checked out the video on your profile, Glatte 2 looks very promising.

When the time comes, let me know how many sounds you think you'll need and your terms, and we can hopefully work out a fair deal for us both.
