Roads and paths with texturing

Does anyone have any ideas for creating roads and paths in the terrain editor?
Ive noticed in some tribes2 maps there are what look like roads or at least paths. ide say that is just a combination of the texturing modes?

Would it be possible to add another polgon texturing method? where you can select faces on the terrain and map it with a standard face mapping?
Or maybe a texture blend mode? 3dsmax will allow you to mix 2 textures based on a greyscale image (simialar to hieghtmap image). Would this be possible in V12? or would it be too much of a performance hit? (im an artist btw not a programmer :)

Raods and paths are going to be really important in our rpg im just tring to find an easy way to do it.
Sorry if im doubling up on posts, I really would like to hear some input on this.
Anyone have any suggestions?

The way roads are textured in Tribes 2 is simply an extention of the terrain texturing functionality provided by the map editor. Basically, you can dictate where textures go by user defined criteria. One of the criteria is basically "apply texture X where the terrain is at slope Y". You can specify any texture to any angle. Consequentially, if you'd like every perfectly flat surface to have a road texture, set the function "apply texture roadTexture.png where the terrain is at slope zero(0)."

If you want more control with you're roads, you'll have to combine the texturing technique above with roads that are interior objects (.dif files). For example, all the bridges in tribes 2 are interior objects.
