Trouble With Saving

by Greg "Bloodaxe" Williamson · in Constructor · 04/10/2007 (10:24 am) · 21 replies

Greetings All,

I am having trouble saving my work. When I try to "save as" the program crashes. I am up on all drivers and I shouldn't have any mem issues...here is my config:

Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
2560MB RAM
253MB used, 4195MB available
DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
256.0 MB

If anyone has any idea what to do please let me know.

Thanks

P.S. I own license for TGE, RTS and TGEA and I did put in the key.

Your system indeed looks like it should have no problems. A couple of questions and ideas :

does it crash every time you try to save something or just once in a while?

Does it matter what it is you are trying to save, i.e. complex scene, simple scene, imported scene?

Does it crash saving it to a certain format (map, csx).

Are there any applicable logs you can post with any info?

Uninstall, then reinstall Constructor. Does the problem continue?

Just some thoughts, let me know how it goes!

Is the crash when you hit the save as which brings you to the folder directory, or is it at the prompt where you already put in your name of the file. Wonder since you have xp pro if it could be some sort of folder permissions.

It is doing it every time. When I click save as and put in a file name the application blinks off and then back on. Then when I click save the application crashes. I have only tried to save in the csx format.I have tried to save simple and complex scenes, I even tried tosave as before I started all with the same results. I will try to get some logs and I will reinstall to see if that works.

Thanks

Everything looks fine until I type in the name of the file. That is when the application blinks off and then back on. Nothing else blinks just the application. The folder directory does not blink, I have dual monitors and nothing on the second monitor blinks.

I have looked at the folder permissions and everything is good.

Thanks

OK...

I reinstalled Constructor and the first save as worked. When I tried to save a second scene the application did the blink again and crashed.

Question...do you think the dual cores have anything to do with it? I would not think so but there is an engine I cannot run because of the dual core...not Torque of course.

Thanks

I made a new folder on my drive, not in constructor, and it seems to work well. The problem is when I try to save to the constructor scene folder.

I will try a few more and again to the constructor scene folder and let you know.

Have you installed the Dual-Core Optimizer from AMD? I'd be interested to see if it is a dual-core timing issue here.

Not yet, but I will do it now.

Ok...

I installed the dual core optimizer and I am having the same problems. The new folder in my doc folder has started to do the same thing as the constructor scene folder, it was started before I installed the dual core opt.

I am at a loss now. It is a very very nice program that will allow me to get production done a lot faster...If I could just use it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Are you trying to save to the desktop?

No... I have tried saving to the constructor scene folder and to a folder I made in my docs. The my docs folder worked for a while but it is not now.

I noticed something that happens when the application blinks. The file name (new01-torque constructor 1.0) is on the top bar in the middle, when I try to save andit does the blink thing the file name is to the far left. If the save works the file name does not move.

Thanks

Ok, few more things in no particular order :

1. Are you running the latest vid drivers *from Nvidia*

2. Are there any configurations that could be a variable, such as USB drive, RAID, something plugged in somewhere, anything you could easily check by installing somewhere else or plugging/unplugging something

3. If you understand setting up debug stuff I could send you a debug build of C'tor and get back a debug log file from you.

4. Can you send in or post your console.log?

5. Are you running 64-bit Windows XP or 32?

6. Do you actually get anything in the saved directory or does the crash halt anything from being saved? If something gets saved, send it in.

7. Does export work at all? Relight scene?

8. Unplug one of your monitors just for kicks and then launch Constructor and try to save something.

Let's look for anything out of the ordinary at all.

Oh, and also, feel free to email me directly. If we get a solution worked out, we'll post it here for others. kenh at garagegames.com

1. Yes, I am running the latest

2. I have a thumb drive plugged in and a dongle for lightwave. I will unplug these to see if it helps.

3. I am not the best at debugging but I will be glad to try.

4. I will send you the console log.

5. I am running 32.

6. I have been successful a few times on a save. remember it is only on the save as and not a normal save.

7. Export does work I have exported and used in TGE.

8. I will try a single monitor.

Thanks

Another thing to try is to save to a folder that doesn't have a space in the name.

Also, are you logged in as an admin?

Are you running any modifications to your shell/explorer? Do you have TortoiseSVN installed or anything else that would effect your file browsing.

If you create another user on your computer (with Admin rights just to be sure), does that user have the same problems?

Matt,

I dont have spaces in the folder names. I will look but I do not think I have anything that would effect the file browsing. I log in with admin, but I will make a new user and try.

I am about to try the above mentioned things of removing all my usb devices and using a single monitor.

I will let y'all know something soon.

Thanks

Well...you mentioned that you were working out of the Constructor/scene folder and the default install location for Constructor is in "Program Files" which has a space in it.

You also mentioned that you were working out of your "my docs" folder by which I took to mean "My Documents" which also has a space in the name.

That is why I asked you to try to save to a folder without a space in the name. It *shouldn't* make a difference but it was a possibility.

Keep us posted...currently we still don't have a repro case for this which means we don't have any way of knowing what the bug is or how to fix it =(

Matt,

I took the no spaces to mean in the folder I was saving to...in this case it is scene. However the docs folder I talked about is c:\docs.

Well I have made a new user with admin rights, removed all of my usb devices and I am running a single monitor. I get the same response. When I do a "save as" and start typing in the file name the constructor blinks and crashes. If I reinstall my first "save as" will work but after that it does the blink and crash thing.

I have checked all of my drivers and essential apps, .net framework, I dont know if this matters or not but I am running 3.0.

I installed the dual-core optimization software.

I have checked all rights and permissions.

I am at a loss.

I will keep playing with it and see if something changes. I need this to work. What I have been able to do with it is excellent.

Thanks

Matt,

I meant to ask...Do you know of a good software I can use to capture a log of the crash. I have a few but for some reason they do not see it.

Thanks

Our best option would be to send you a debug build and have you capture the crash in Visual C++ Express and send the call stack log to us. If you are interested in going this route then go ahead and get VC++ Express installed and we can walk you through the rest.

We are at a bit of a loss here also. The only other options I can think of is for you to wait until a Linux port is finished and have you use the script based file browsers or for you do do a full reinstall of Windows on your computer.
