Garage Games tells MMO-Kit to stop selling. Why?
by Wolf Dreamer · in General Discussion · 03/30/2007 (11:03 am) · 8 replies
Yesterday, I and everyone else who bought the MMO-kit got an email from Dreams Inc which read in part:
So for about a year of continously development, they've had the support of Garage Games, and now suddently they are told they can't sell it anymore. I'm just curious why that is?
Did you give them permission to sell it for just one year, or some other limited amount of time?
Did Garage Games make this decision just to eliminate competition from the new MMORPG kit they are developing with Prairie Games? If there was another reason, please let me know.
Josh Ritter, owner of Prairie Games, has this to say in his blog:

Due to a seasoning of our business relationship with Garage Games, we will no longer be offering Titas and Gryphon for sale after 4/6/2007. If you are an owner of these products, do not be alarmed! Wonderful things are ahead for you.

I am extremely happy to announce that Prairie Games and GarageGames are working together on something big... really, really BIG! :)
Minions of Mirth's technology is the world's first production ready, commercially proven, award winning, indie friendly, MMORPG system... and it will be available to purchase at GarageGames!!!

Honestly now. That seems rather odd.
I am also concerned that you will not fully support something you are no longer selling, concentrating instead of your new FPS Kit instead. How many programmers do you have total? Can you honestly tell me most aren't going to be taken off the MMO-kit and put to work on your newer product instead?
And yes, I did buy the MMO-Kit back in September, using my real name Thomas Prewitt, or actually ThomasPrewitt since for whatever reason the forum and download server doesn't allow spaces in names.
If you sold someone a product, you should make certain it is your priority until you have it finished. Those of us who paid for it, deserve to know whats going on, and if by support you mean just have one guy sporactically add in things for it and never get it finished, or if you have the majority of your people still working on it.
How long until all the promised features listed a year ago, are fully implemented into it?
And should anyone buy your FPS kit now, or just wait a year or so and see if you managed to get something working, and with all the listed features in it?

Announcement and replies to concerns
Most likely the main reason for them stopping the sell
They said they will complete the product and continue to support it. They just released a new update, which is IMO a good sign of faith.
They have not shown the least amount of discontent with this arrangement, so I'm not sure why you should either.

While your concerns might be validated if there were no announcements or promises from the company, these issues have already been addressed:Announcement and replies to concerns

I have to ask Wolf Dreamer...did you read their site? Their blogs? Their forums? This has been talked to death and it seems like you just found out...and are flying off the handle without doing any research. That's the impression that you're leaving right now: like you haven't read anything and are running on conjecture.

Also, they have been doing alot of updates to the MMOKIT and TITAS in the last two weeks. So the priority to finishing them is high on their list.

@Wolf: If you have questions or concerns about the MMOKIT, you can go on mydreamrpg irc and talk with the team members. I have had several questions and concerns answered by Ash , Dave and other Dream devs. As they said several times, they are going to complete the MMOKIT and TITAS. It is posted on GG and Dream forums. Also, they have been doing alot of updates to the MMOKIT and TITAS in the last two weeks. So the priority to finishing them is high on their list.

I checked on their forum, and found nothing. I still don't see anything, other than them anouncing their FPS kit. I tried to post there, but a moderator decided not to let my questions be seen, I simply wondering how many programmers would be working to finish the MMO-kit, and how many would be transfered over to concentrate on their new product. You need moderator's review and approval to get anything posted in the announcement section.
Anyway, I did search the forums here, and found nothing.
But yeah, the blog does answer things.
Well that answers that question somewhat I suppose.
Temporarily until something better comes along to give their support to? Curious how that works, but I doubt I'll get an answer.

We have been selling and working on the two products for almost a year, during which time a lot has changed. Legally, one cannot simply create and sell a Torque based code or engine add-on without explicit permission from GarageGames, as such things fall into the derivative engine product category. Last summer we established a temporary agreement with GarageGames and it has since matured into something better for Dream Games, GarageGames and the general Torque user.
Well that answers that question somewhat I suppose.

Love it when someone creates a post with an underlining of accusations, gets informed and corrected, then takes only the information they feel they can use to make sarcastic and pretentious replies.
I swear, trying to provide help is sometimes as difficult and painful as trying to eat a hard-cover book minutes after having a root canal performed by a hack dentist coming down from an acid trip....

Yup, I'm done watching this thread, as it has no more opportunity to be helpful, gain information, or provide entertainment.Love it when someone creates a post with an underlining of accusations, gets informed and corrected, then takes only the information they feel they can use to make sarcastic and pretentious replies.
