UVs as materials (in blender)

I was trying to use blender's UV baking feature, but I'm running into problems. The tutorial says to, after mapping the texture, delete the image from the UV window, then add the image as a material and select UV under "map input". When I do this, however, the object doesn't use the UV texture. I also tried adding another UV layer and selecting the first one specifically under map input, but it uses the active layer no matter what I enter.

What I'm trying to do is use several images for UV textures, then re-unwrap and bake them into one texture to use in the game.

I use this technique too. Don't bother deleting anything from the UV window. what you need to do is create an additional set of UV coords and re-unwrap to those. then be sure to type the name of those new uv's in the box on the Map Input tab.
