by Ian Buchanan · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 06/24/2002 (1:56 pm) · 16 replies

Hi new user here. (uh-oh says everyone)

Basically I'm hanging low at the moment mucking with the realm wars project, but I plan to make a game of my own in this community. The only problem is I am not sure where to start do I register a company first or sign up in the developers section or do I list my idea in the projects section OR do I look for a team first ? I have some concept art and a design doc already worked up. ANy help would be great

To be honest, I would just start making your game. Once you have something to show, it will be much easier to attract others to help out. The rest is details that you can deal with as you need them. Just get going. Finding the time and building the skills required to make the game in the first place should be the first hurdle(s) you take on. Don't give up...

I'm not sure you have too much of a problem; your keen and willing at least. I always thought that I would be unable to code, but now I do it for a living... Mostly it's finding a project to interest you and learning from that. As it stands my C++ is pretty poor, but I'm learning quicky thanks to working with the torque engine.

    Ian,

Keep it up. You are doing it the way that I advocate, i.e. show that you can do things and sell yourself. Your website looks great. I glanced at your design (please run a spell check), but didn't read it enough to make a judgement.

    Good luck!

I have to give you credit for a clever IDEA (I looked at your web page).

My question is how close to "The Book" do you plan on playing this.

You're targeting a potentially large and untapped gaming market!

    Eeek religion in games.

Not my cup a tea but hey whatever floats ure boat :)

Its original and theres definetely an audience. If it can be done without all the preaching of god then even i might get addicted :).

Many games have religion in there story , deus ex and what not but they do it in a way which isnt harassing to the player. If you can do that then you could be onto a winner.

I agree that the message can't be forced down the players throat! I read that one of the major problems with many "Christian" films is just that.

But I do think he's got a good idea! And I hope he can make it fly!

yeah thanks for the support guys.
Listen I'll be honest, first and formost I'm making a game not a church. Yes its based closely on christianity, yes everything is in some abstract way linked to "the book" but no it's not going to exlude people from enjoying the game. For example there is no preaching on right or wrong behavior or the condition of non-christians. This is an abstract perception of the christian mind/body/spirit conflict. The design doc has alot of referances and goes MUCH more indepth to the theologicial side of things, but most of these concepts wont be as obvious in-game.

Yes there is a massive untapped potential audiance here but I plan to approach them differently. Usually christian media is aiming to penetrate a market with the message, I plan the opposite and penetrate the christian audiance with computer gaming

A little more indepth study into the DD it will show you that "heavy preaching" would be fatal to the game I understand that and plan to again approach this in a new fresh manner. Because I agree this is the fatal mistake so many people make. I'll keep you all posted on more updates

oh and yes my spelling is horrid and thank you for your support

Well, I give up on having an original idea.

Ian, I'm just working for about a month on a storyline that have a lot in common with yours. It's about a nightmare of a soldier that lost his sanity after a life serving a violent dictatorship. Haunted by his own guilt, he fights for redemption against his inner demons, in his last second of life. It's mostly a terror story, but the lots of gore in it will only support a very human drama, about victims and agressors, with a heavenly end.

I was having a very naive delirium myself, thinking I was the only M. Night Shyalaman down here. Poor me.

Ian, all I can say is good luck. There's a lot of potential in your story. Let's keep ourselves informed about the progress of both projects.

Everybody tends to hide their ideas, as if nobody can have loads of it everyday. I'm not this "my idea, my treasure" kind, it's pointless. It's not about being the totally original one (impossible!), it's about the strenght of the story and the fun of the game.

The development of my web site with the project's page is scheduled to start this weekend. I'll post something to TGE community when it's available.

Please work on your topic writing. If you want to know where to start maybe your topic should have been "Where should I start in my new project?" or "I am starting a new project, what should I do first?". If you dont summarise your post in the topic title, you are wasting everybodys time.

    ummm ... k.
maybe if u were so tight on time u shouldnt really waste time correcting peoples topic writting ... just a thought. I'm not here to crit people or start a bitch fight which to be honest looks like what ur trying to do. I'll drop this as it is ...well pointless.

Murad I'm glad to hear your words of encouragement and our common goals. Yes I agree poeple do seem to have some weird protection over there ideas, there "babies" i guess. I'm glad this post seems to have resurrected itself. I had given up hope to be honest on the community support. I seem to have a reoccuring problem with commitment within any community its like everyones syked we move mountians and all of a sudden it all stops. It's not like there is lack of direction i dont think but something happens and people stop. Anyone else have this problem ?

Not for me. Listen, the guy just asks what to do. Is that illegal or something? You're only being a threat to this community if you're always replying like that. Shape up man, everyone deserves a chance, even the biggest n00b of all.

Ian, just ignore the guy. You're doing nothing wrong in my opinion.

I think everybody has this problem. It's very hard to conceive a huge project (like a game) and stick to it until the end, even for stablished companies. What to say about an indie run...

I'm looking for help around my home city, and selecting carefully before put someone in, like I would do about any project of any nature.

But what about your project, Ian? Any progress?

At the moment Im back to square one. Im re-working the design doc (including the horrid spelling) The concept remains pretty much intact so nothing much that way hs changed. Once I have completed my reworkings (which include new conceptual art) I'll start hunting within the community and the "local" community as well. I had intended to stick to the GG community but I just get let down too often. So my next bunch I'll be looking for commitment from square one above all else
