Scripters / Modders using Documentation?

by Justin Miller · in Torque Game Engine · 03/08/2007 (4:54 pm) · 5 replies

I understand that to access TDN, other members of my team would need to buy their own licenses. Being the programmer on my team, I own the license for TGEA, but I have a couple team members who will be doing only level design and some light scripting. I'd really like to be able to give them documents like the one titled "TSE/Atlas/Create a Terrain/Terragen" from TDN, but I know they would never buy a license just for that. Is there any provision for such a setup? It would seem silly if the engine is licensed per-programmer, but that in reality, non-programmers need to buy a license to get documentation on what they're trying to do.

TDN will eventually have a public section for such articles that are not specific to engine code. This is planned for when TDN leaves beta. For now, you could probably just print those tutorials or docs out for your team, as long as there is no engine code in them.

So...like I said....I am grabbing a lot of already existing documentation (for script, engine, and more) and consolidating them into one article as a go to starter area for veterans and n00bs alike. I understand there are brilliant coders out there who know jack-sh*** about how to use forums and search features. I also believe they are, in general, decent people who just need a little guidance on how to find things.

That's all I got....

Good samaritan for life, Mich.

@Justin - BTW, for the specific TDN article you were talking about, a lot of the info was posted in Russel's .plan.

He was willing to make the whole resource public, so I'd say you have the green light to save the webpage and distribute that specific tutorial to your team members.

Hopefully the public section of TDN will be available soon, but in the mean time I haven't heard an objection from employees to pass non-engine based articles on to your artists, scripters, and level designers. Good luck with the development, and I'll let you know when my new resource/article is available =).
