Request to all game makers: please don't start in full-screen

It's great that games have a full screen option,
but for those of us who don't use it or are just checking out the demo,
it sucks if full screen is the default.

especially in some dual-monitor configurations,
because going full screen on one monitor moves all of the windows on that monitor to the second one and then life is horrible and you have to seek counselling.

thank you,

Hmm, i cant imagine playing a game that's not in full screen.

while i understand your point of view, if i load a game and it doesn't go fullscreen, i'm usually pressing alt-enter before the menu even comes up.

For the final product, it's a personal choice that is really effected by what sort of experience the game creates. If you're playing an intense horror RPG set in the foggy streets of london town - you're probably gonna want to play the game fullscreen, in the dark, stoned off your face.

However, if your game's more of a casual affair (like an online card game or a puzzler), then you'll probably prefer to run it in a window.

I think Orion means that for development stuff and WIP releases windowed gameplay would be a nice default, as the end user won't really be playing them for the full 'experience'. Even for final candidate releases it should at least be an option to run the game windowed.

right - absolutely, and that works for you.
but if a game *does* start in full-screen mode,
i don't have any opportunity to make it windowed
before it shoves all my windows all over the place.

i'm definitely, definitely in favour having both fullscreen and windowed mode,
i just think that windowed is a better choice for the default setting than fullscreen.

I like fullscreen for most commercial titles...

What I *don't* like fullscreen for is when a game that requires me to enter a registration code goes fullscreen, demands the code, and provides no obvious way to un-fullscreen it so I can look at the web browser behind it showing me the code. Hellloooooo, Tube Twist.

LOL, that's how our game is except it's Chicago instead of London and I agree with you. However, like already mentioned, if I'm just checking out someone's WIP, then I would prefer if it started windowed.
