hi,
would any 1 be able to answer this:
I'm a bit confused about all this multiplayer business? do you have to specify an IP address for a TCPIP connection. I'm probably being stupid but I don't understand - Does this refer to you own IP address or a server IP address? Can you just specify a web page IP address and be done with it or what? Do all the other players have to specify the same IP address?
any help on this topic would be appreciated

Do you even know what an IP address is?

An IP address is a way of telling your computer how to access information on another computer.

Let's assume you are using tcp/ip for a computer game. The information you are accessing is the server data on whats in the gameworld and where everyone else is and what they are doing.

Read what you wrote and then think about how it all works.

[Explanation in case you can't figure it out]
It requires the IP address of a game server and it has to be a correct address otherwise your PC doesnt know how to connect to what.

TCP/IP is a protocol used to locate computers on the internet and transfer information between those computers. An IP address is your location on the internet.

But to answer your question, you must enter the address of the server you wish to connect to.

TCP is the Transfer and Control Protocol
IP is the Internet Protocol

IP is the protocol used to transfer the data packets beetween 2 computers, TCP is a datagram protocol which holds the actual raw data wrapped in an IP packet frame.
An IP address is like a phone number or something like that... so u need the phone number of the game server you want to connect to, or you can use your addressbook (DNS) to convert a name (www.mygameserver.com) to an IP (123.456.789.123)
So you establish a TCP connectiong beetween two computer using the IP layer...
It's rather very much complicated, there are whole books about TPC and IP. I've got an O'Reilly one which is very good, but never finished reading it :)

Very informative answer Xavier. I like it much better than the rude version produced by the Associate. I guess they just get tired of answering questions after a while.

Rude is an understatement. That was just plain insulting... and unprofessional.

No David there's a whole 'nother catagory of stupid questions. They're the ones asked by people who couldn't bothered to tak 10 minutes and TRY to find an answer themselves before coming to aks for the information to be handed to them.

Tim doesn't get paid to answer people's questions. He's not employed by GarageGames so he's free to be an unprofessional as he wishes. While it may come across as harsh, a significant number of posters to these forums need to be smacked around with a clue-by-four until they learn to RTFM, and STFW before increasing the signal to noise ratio.

Why are we dredging up dirt that is a year old? Tim's response was not representative of GarageGames and neither was J. Donovan Stanley's. I know it gets tedious for some members of the community to answer questions, but the correct response if you are annoyed is to not respond.

Jeff,

First of all. You're right. I'm usually pretty good about walking away before hitting submit. Chalk this one up to work related stress.

Secondly, DOH! I didn't notice the post date.
