Lossless Compressed Image Format?

by Sean Brockest · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 02/22/2007 (9:21 am) · 4 replies

I'm working on th world map for an MMO. I've got it pretty big, 3700 x 2700, and i'm about to make it bigger (probably about 5X the size, need more definition on small areas)

Anyway, the problem is that even at 3700 x 2700, it's already a 26 meg bitmap. I chose bitmap because it's lossless. But there must be a lossless format that has at least some compression. I dont want to have a 200 meg bitmap after i increase this one again.

Thanks.

Png. it's lossless, compressed, supported by web browsers, and has an alpha channel too, if you want it.

Png worked, even at 10800 x 8100, it's 6 megs. granted there's not a lot of definition yet, all land and water and rivers so far.

If it's for print, then just keep it huge. If it is not, then chunk it up.
