WorldCraft?!?!?!
by Anthony Rosenbaum · in General Discussion · 06/17/2002 (12:10 pm) · 30 replies
Well I finnally have gotten to a point where having an interior would be nice. However I head that the current WorldCraft is NOT supporting Torque. Is this True? If so does someone have a copy of the old worldcraft posted somewhere? If not what are my alternative? I heard about quark, is this a free program? If so where can I get a copy of it? Can anyone help ?!?!?!

We still do not have the new EULA, WorldCraft aka Hammer is not and has never been available at the URL that was provided in that announcement.

It's been over 2 months (getting close to 3 now) since that promise was made.We still do not have the new EULA, WorldCraft aka Hammer is not and has never been available at the URL that was provided in that announcement.

when you refer to DL'ing do you mean the EULA or the Application? if you mean the Application, the note does not state that it would be available for DL at the URL; but instead the EULA when it is ready.

Regardless of that minor fact, they still have not provided anything other then a promise. And I'm sorry but a promise doesn't hold a lot of water when it comes to legal proceedings.
Sure we could use the older 3.3 version of Worldcraft as it did not have an EULA with it. But at this point that is supporting a company that, until I see the EULA, I would have to say has lied to us.
Quark4Torque on the other hand is free, and is not entangled in the core assets of a "competing" company.

Why put the EULA for Worldcraft / Hammer at a site that has nothing to do with that application and has never had that application there for download?Regardless of that minor fact, they still have not provided anything other then a promise. Although appreciative of the generous offer from Valve to GG developers, I still like the idea of enencumbered, open source tools. If I were working on a project, I would look strongly at those options.

We are happy that Valve gave GG developers the OK to use Worldcraft. It is up to them to provide an updated EULA. I imagine they have a lot on their plate, and upgrading a free tool EULA is not at the top of the list.Although appreciative of the generous offer from Valve to GG developers, I still like the idea of enencumbered, open source tools. Is there an offical announcement from Valve? Which version grant for GG developer? WorldCraft 3.3 or Hammer 3.4?
I cannot use Quark on my PC, so I want switch to Hammer.

I have been emailed valve a few times this past week about this, here is what I have received back so far:"I redirected one of your previous emails to our legal department yesterday. I'm am not sure what their schedule is like but I assume you should hear from them shortly. Sorry about the wait!"

We moved on a long time ago. Our official solution is to use Quark.
Quark is open source. It works very well.

Valve has much more important things on their plate than licensing WC/Hammer to Torque users. Valve never followed through with their license change. We moved on a long time ago. Our official solution is to use Quark.

1.5 Indemnity. Licensee hereby agrees that it is solely responsible for any and all New Levels and Licensee's creation, distribution, and promotion thereof. Licensee shall defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Valve, its officers, directors, employees and agents against any and all claims, damages, losses, or liabilities whatsoever arising out of Licensee's creation, distribution, or promotion of the New Levels.

I don't know if a license can be retroactive. You might consult with Tom Buscaglia. Or, you might just port them over to a different program and hope for the best. ;-)I don't know... maybe using WC 3.3 is OK, but not Hammer 3.4?

Quit going down the Worldcraft/Hammer road. If you choose to do so, uou are totally on your own. Quark is actually a good editor. Marble Blast, which was created with Quark, is performance proof that a great game can be made with this editor. Desmond Fletcher has created some of the most amazing architectural walk throughs that I have ever seen using Quark.
Quark is open source, and it works. It is the only recomended GG CSG editor. We are not going to pursue using WC/Hammer or any licensing variants to allow GG community users to use it.
Lastly, GG will not publish games created with Hammer/WC. We do not want the liability.
